Seven News claims 2022 win in Melbourne

Melbourne bulletin with Peter Mitchell draws its best result in more than a decade.

Seven News Melbourne has claimed a 2022 win over Nine, after winning 32 of 39 consolidated weeks in survey.

The bulletin with anchor Peter Mitchell, Tim Watson and Jane Bunn, is wrapping its best result in 11 years.

Seven Network Director of News and Public Affairs, Craig McPherson, said: “It’s been a watershed year for Seven News Melbourne. We have dominated the news market in Australia’s biggest viewing city, with the best result in 11 years. It’s a phenomenal effort by our team superbly led by Shaun Menegola.

“With our presenting team across the full week of Peter Mitchell, Tim Watson, Jane Bunn, Rebecca Maddern, Mike Amor and Abby Gelmi, complemented by a quality team of reporters and a vibrant production desk, Seven News Melbourne offers the people of Victoria the very best choice to turn to for everything they need to know, every day of the year.”

Peter Mitchell said: “These results show the hard work of the entire crew here at Seven and I am so incredibly proud and humbled to be a part of the team. There is always something happening in Melbourne and we are so honoured to be the number one news service, keeping the city informed.”

Melbourne News Director, Shaun Menegola, said, “We’re thrilled to be recognised as Melbourne’s number one news service. As a team, we put a hard focus on the news and issues that impact directly on Victorians.

“Every member of the team sets out every day to make sure we deliver the full picture at 6.00pm. Our objective each night is to not just cover every aspect of the news of the day, but to cover it better than everyone else.

“It’s fantastic that Melburnians have turned to our bulletin in 2022 and trusted us to deliver coverage of everything that happened – floods, Federal and State elections, and conflict in Ukraine, as well as the outpouring of grief following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“We see this result as the beginning, not the finish line. We understand we have to work hard to maintain the trust of the audience. We look forward to building on that in 2023.”

  1. sadly the viewers are leaving all networks like rats leaving a sinking ship. People can get their news in so many ways these days, 4pm 5pm and 6pm doesn’t really suit the modern person. (im sure thats a little different in regional areas though)

  2. Both networks have seen a decline this year in the ratings for their main News services. Previously these had held up well as the move to streaming had not impacted news as that was not the focus of the streamers.

However in 2022 both Nine and Seven have declined just that Nine has had a sharper and quicker fall. I really do not know what the reasons were for this but something has really put off about 10% to 15% of Nine’s audience quicker than it has Seven’s.

In either case Seven cannot crow too much as was noted – they have won due to not losing as many viewers as their competitor. Hardly a major mark of success and the raw numbers they are getting in the key demographics keep dropping as well something that must impact the desire of advertisers to continue paying as much as they have.

  3. Based on my memory of the numbers (I’m too lazy to go back and review), the seven win has largely come from nines numbers in Melbourne declining rather than sevens increasing. Based on this year, nine now really only dominates Sydney with Brisbane neck and neck.
