Although Australia were eliminated by Argentina in the knockouts, Aus should be very proud of what they’ve achieved so far in the World Cup. They broke a 12.5-year drought by winning a WC Game and made it to the Round of 16 for the first time since June 2006.
Well done to Australia for making it to the Round of 16, and despite their elimination, they were far from disgraced after making it to the Round of 16 in a competition that they nearly missed out on, as well as setting several new records (scoring in every match, clean sheets in two consecutive games including one against Denmark, a European country). Of course, the Socceroos will be back in Qatar next year for the AFC Asian Cup.
I was on the website of The Korea Times, and a bit of trivia for the Round of 16 on Tuesday morning: If both Japan and South Korea wins their Round of 16 game, then they will play each other in the quarter finals, so that particular quarter final would be a must watch due to the rivalry between the two countries (one of Asia’s biggest rivalries, bigger than Japan and Australia), as well as the often tense relationship between the two countries throughout history (but that’s for a different website).
