Sam Johnson makes emotional plea to Molly

He played Molly on screen but now actor Sam Johnson has shared his concern for a music legend ...and regrets over that Logie night.

A distressed Sam Johnson has made an impassioned plea to Molly Meldrum to “hang up his hat” following the music legend’s now-infamous ‘mooning’ at an Elton John concert last week.

Johnson, who won the Gold Logie for his portrayal in Molly, has told The Morning Show,

“I want to do him a service, not a disservice. I’m a little bit uneasy talking about this. Firstly, thank you Molly. He has helped me out of a legal pickle. He visited my sister in hospital when she was sick with cancer when she was 11 in the 1980s. I am really grateful for everything Molly has done in our lives.”

But he also blasted the music legend for upstaging his Gold Logie win.

“I was about to have my million-dollar moment and I told him specifically not to come up on stage. He was not nominated, it was my moment. I wanted to make it about cancer and he wanted to make it all about the network. He ended up coming up at the Gold Logies and it was my million-dollar moment gone wrong.”

He added, “maybe it’s time to hang up your hat, mate.”

Johnson, who said Meldrum “cost my charity $1 million” told The Morning Show he was concerned for Meldrum’s welfare.

“For years, I have not said anything. I don’t want to say anything. Who are his minders? Is he OK?”

TMS entertainment correspondent Peter Ford later tweeted, “Samuel was very upset after this appearance and worried he’d said too much. But he viewed it as ‘tough love’.”

However on Logie night, Johnson also gave a speech, threw away his cards and offered Meldrum the microphone.

  1. This all started with a radio interview he did and he most probably thought that it would go unnoticed. I think Larry and Kylie caught him off guard at first and he was reluctant to get into it but once he changed his mind, he couldn’t help himself and it all came blurting out. Good to finally get it off his chest but he shouldn’t have gone into the personal drinking thing. That to me was embarrassing for everyone.

  2. Sometimes its hard to accept when people age and start to deteriorate but its not their fault. Molly has done so much to help many people and now its his time to get help so I think Sam should of kept it out of the media and knocked on his door to see if Molly was ok. Without Molly the movie, Sam would not of got that Gold Logie. Elton always said that there is no one else in the world like Molly. Lets not forget that and remember him at his best.

  3. I do remember that Logies and how it appeared Molly hijacked Samuels Logie win. I may have used those very words for a comment on this site at the time. Usually a Logie win is a chance for the winner to shine, but Molly took up the bulk of Sam’s screen time. Good on him for finally speaking out I say.

      1. I think you will find it had a gift of a gold hat for Sam. It’s not like he had just been to Target. Again, Molly is a senior and suffered brain injuries. We need to do better in the way we deal with these matters.

    1. That’s what i thought was so obvious that he was not showing his real bum, yet no one seems to have mentioned it in the media. Slow news week i guess…

  4. I was surprised to see Molly at Elton’s concert as I thought they had a falling out from that Sunday Night interview. I later read that they buried the hatchet in 2019.

On that Logies speech, I think Sam might be missing the fact that the role itself gave him a lot of free publicity around his charity.

  5. I saw the interview this morning and agree with most of the above. Molly is no teenager, he is an old man who needs to act responsibly. Why crawl on his hands and knees onto the stage at Elton Johns concert and bare his bum.? Come on this is ridiculous! I bet Elton was embarrassed. Molly’s light has faded and its sad that he has to ride on other peoples coat-tails to maintain a media presence.

The sad part is that Molly may have lost the respect of his and consequently may have cost Sams charity a lot of money.

    1. For context, I believe he had been crowd surfed onto the stage by audience after Elton dedicated Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me to a ‘national treasure.’ Surely the Molly movie was riding on his coattails, not the reverse.

  6. A very sad situation all around. I agree that someone needs to tap Molly on the shoulder. His antics were amusing once, but now it’s too far.

But is Sam much better? that stuff about the alcohol does not need to be aired so publicly.

I think the whole industry has a responsibility to refuse Molly opportunities to self-destruct.

  7. Also wanted to add a kudos for Larry and Kylie handling this so smoothly. Definitely an uncomfortable moment for them too, but I think they managed it well without escalating it. They took it seriously and were clearly as stunned as the rest of us.

    1. I disagree. It was clear they didn’t do their homework when they said “I thought this was something you could just patch up with a phone call” when he didn’t want to ever speak to him again.
I cringed when they said “what would you say to him if he’s watching right now” as if Molly Meldrum would watch The Morning Show each day.

  8. I think that both Molly and Sam are not in a great place and as David said, it’s unfortunate this had to be public. Sam’s clearly held a lot in for a few years, but maybe it needed to be said. If things are that bad for Molly, and he’s not being looked after, maybe this will be the catalyst to change that.

Sam clearly was uncomfortable about answering this and his anxiety rocketed. I feel for him as this is a difficult situation, he’s always led with his heart and he didn’t want to humiliate Molly, but also felt he had to speak up. Sending lots of love and support his way, and to Molly.

I hope both of them are okay.

  9. While Molly’s behavior hasn’t been right for a long time, Sam seems to be quite fragile as well. I’ve thought for awhile that his behavior was a tad manic and anxious. What do the rest of you think?

  10. It was a shocker seeing it on the news, it was not necessary or appropriate makes you wonder what Molly was thinking or if he was thinking at all. Samuel has a heart of gold and good intentions and I agree 100% enough of Molly trying to remain in the spotlight time to bow out gracefully not disgracefully by making a fool of yourself for all to see.
