Scrublands, new drama underway for Stan.

Luke Arnold, Bella Heathcote, Jay Ryan feature in a new crime drama for Stan / Nine now filming in Victoria.

Stan and the 9Network have commenced production in Victoria on a new local crime drama, Scrublands. starring Luke Arnold (Black Sails, Never Tear Us Apart), Bella Heathcote ( C*A*U*G*H*T, Relic), with Jay Ryan (Go Girls, Beauty & the Beast, Neighbours).

Based on the award-winning novel written by Chris Hammer, the series directed by  Greg McLean and produced by Easy Tiger.

Scrublands is set in an isolated country town, where a charismatic and dedicated young priest (Jay Ryan) calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners. One year later investigative journalist Martin Scarsden (Luke Arnold) arrives in Riversend to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy. But when Martin’s instincts kick in and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart and he finds himself in a life and death race to uncover the truth.

The cast also includes Zane Ciarma (Neighbours), Adam Zwar (Squinters, Lowdown, Wilfred), Victoria Thaine (Nowhere Boys), Robert Taylor (The Newsreader), Stacy Clausen (True Spirit), Genevieve Morris (No Activity, Bloom) and newcomer Ella Ferris.

The Stan Original Series Scrublands is directed by Greg McLean, written by Felicity Packard, Kelsey Munro and Jock Serong, produced by Ian Collie, Rob Gibson, David Redman, Felicity Packard with Executive Producers Michael Healy and Andy Ryan from the 9Network and Cailah Scobie and Amanda Duthie for Stan.

International sales of the series are handled by Abacus Media Rights.

  1. Agree troy_story. Stan needs to lift their game with Aussie drama. I always try to support the local offerings, but didn’t make it through their latest Christmas movie, or Black Snow, or Bad Behaviour. Think they have to go back to story-telling school!

      1. Wow. I thought Black Snow was pretty good. Atmospheric, great location, good actors (mostly). I watch a lot of British and Scandi crime series and Black Snow holds up well against them. Happy in this case not to have to make excuses for an Aussie production.

  2. I’m loving Stan’s commitment to commissioning Aussie drama…! That’s despite me being underwhelmed by their offerings thus far (even Bump had a rocky S2 after an excellent S1, redeeming itself with a very good S3). Black Snow was close to awful imo, Bad Behaviour was ok. The more Aussie productions the better though!
