AFL agrees not to use wheelchair zone for broadcasters

"After last weeks seating disaster today the AFL has committed to never using disabled seating areas for media / broadcast."

It’s a victory for Darren Cunningham and his son James after last week being unable to sit in a designated wheelchair zone because TV broadcasters were blocking their view.

The Carlton fans, who both use wheelchairs, took to social media to tweet some better news.

“After last weeks seating disaster today the AFL has committed to NEVER using disabled seating areas for media/broadcast at ANY AFL stadium ever again!” James said on Twitter yesterday.

According to tweets, MCG has agreed not to use the space for any events at the stadium.

Carlton Football Club also invited both onto the ground to be in the #Baggers guard of honour.

Broadcasters indicated the space was allocated to them by the MCC / AFL.

  1. Maybe the stadium needs to build a dedicated space to host from!

Only reason they’re hosting there is because there aren’t any other suitable areas at the MCG.

The broadcasters pay a fortune to broadcast AFL, I think having a spot to host from (like all other stadium’s) isn’t too much to ask!

  2. Terrific news. As a wheelchair user myself I know all too well how few accessible spots there generally are at stadiums and how difficult it is to get them so to have them taken away for commentators is the last thing needed.
