Airdate: Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe

First look at bonkers new ABC comedy from the Aunty Donna trio.

ABC will finally return to local comedy in its traditional 9pm Wednesday slot in April with the very bonkers Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe.

Created by Aunty Donna (Mark Samual Bonanno, Broden Kelly, and Zachary Ruane) the six-part series follows the adventures of three best mates running a trendy Melbourne café.

Hell-bent on creating the best joint in the neighbourhood (without having any of the necessary skills), Mark, Zach and Broden embark on weekly adventures that cover everything from dealing with a bad review to calming evil spirits who have a penchant for Gardening Australia.

The show is described as “ridiculously fun, rollicking series featuring songs, characters, celebrity cameos and constant left turns. However, at the heart of this show is a story about three friends working together to make something special.”

The cast includes are Gaby Seow (Late Night with the Devil, Get Krack!n), Sally-Anne Upton (Wentworth, Neighbours), Michelle Brasier (Drunk History Australia, Stories from Oz, Mad as Hell), Vidya Rajan (At Home Alone Together) and Mish Wittrup (Aunty Donna: Glennridge Secondary College.)

Special guest stars include Richard Roxburgh, Pia Miranda, Nazeem Hussain, Miranda Tapsell, Shaun Micallef, Tony Martin, Melanie Bracewell, Steven Oliver, Sam Pang and Sammy J.

Aunty Donna (shouting in caps) said, “HELLO IT IS US AUNTY DONNA AND NOT AN EVIL ROBOT THAT HAS TAKEN MARK ZACH AND BRODEN HOSTAGE. WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR ALL THE HUMANS TO SEE OUR NEW COMEDY PROGRAM AUNTY DONNA’S COFFEE CAFE. WE ARE ESPECIALLY THANKFUL TO THE ENTITIES KNOWN AS ABC AND SCREEN AUSTRALIA AND VIC SCREEN BUT MOSTLY WE ARE THANKFUL TO ALL THE MACHINES THAT WORK TIRELESSLY FOR US WITH NO THANKS. WE ARE FINE AND DO NOT NEED HELP NOR RESCUE, ”

Production credit: Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe is a Haven’t You Done Well Productions production for ABC. Principal production investment from the ABC and Screen Australia in association with VicScreen.

Aunty Donna’s director/producer Max Miller and writer/executive producers Sam Lingham, Broden Kelly, Mark Samual Bonanno, Thomas Armstrong and Zachary Ruane are joined by producer Nicole Minchin and executive producer Georgia Mappin. ABC Executive Producers are Rachel Millar and Todd Abbott.

9pm Wednesday 12 April on ABC plus all episodes available to binge on iview.

  1. Keen, I loved Big Ol’ House of Fun so definitely holding out hope this is great as well.

If this does well enough, I wonder if Aunty Donna would press to try and get ABC to commission a BOHOF season 2…
