Death in Paradise ‘cross-over’

DI Humphrey Goodman to return to Saint Marie, in the series spin-off. Warning: spoilers.

Spoilers ahead:

DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) will make a surprise visit to Death in Paradise‘s Saint Marie.

The storyline comes via the series finale of spin-off, Beyond Paradise, currently screening in Australia on BBC First.

“I was honoured and delighted to return to Guadeloupe as part of Humphrey’s journey in Beyond Paradise, and to rekindle my deep passion for the island,” said Marshall.

In the final episode of the spin-off, the Shipton Abbott police team are faced with a seemingly impossible case to crack. A burglary seems clear-cut at first when the thief’s unusual calling card matches that of local criminal Atticus Styles (Spencer Jones), but when the forensic evidence comes back, it all points to another suspect.

The only problem is the suspect, Hayley Collins (Hannah Traylen), was locked up in a police cell by PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) at the time of the crime. Meanwhile, still reeling from recent events, DI Humphrey Goodman’s mind is elsewhere as he considers his future in Shipton Abbott…

It’s not clear if Marshall will resurface in future Death in Paradise episodes, despite BBC referring to it as a ‘cross-over.’

  1. I read an article by a UK critic claiming that Little would probably leave DIP, and then it would be impossible for the show not to cast a Black lead detective and finally out an end toit’s blatant colonialism and racism. As they had done a story where Neville was the main suspect and brought in a new investigator, I figured the change over was already being set up but I haven’t been paying much attention. The first two episodes of BP were good while they set it up, but after that the mysteries weren’t and it was mostly a soap opera about Martha and her relationship with Humphrey, her IVF problems, her relationship with her domineering mother, her relationship with her ex-fiancee and her running a successful cafe and a duck. The duck had the best lines. There is a sort of a subplot about Humphrey’s intuition and sense of community v modern policing but that doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere.

  2. I’m not a follower of the mother show. Any time I’ve fell apon Death In Paradise I’ve usually found it quite flat. But I really like this new show, it’s kind of very similar in setting and style to Doc Martin, just swapping the medical for police. The characters are great and the episodes are entertaining. I don’t get the appeal of the opening theme music, though, which I found quite awful.

  3. The final episode of this series will air in the UK on Friday.

There are sufficient parallels in the format with Death in Paradise that if you like the latter, you will almost certainly enjoy the former, however Beyond Paradise is generally lighter and more soap-based in its content.

Curiously, the final episode of Death in Paradise and first instalment of this spin-off were screened in the UK on the same evening and, ratings wise, the new show was the victor.

For me personally, Death in Paradise has the stronger format, but Kris Marshall’s character was the best lead Death in Paradise had, so there is plenty of goodwill for the spin-off (and it’s an entertaining watch as well).

Its huge ratings also mean that a second series is almost assured.

  4. Poor Humpyfrey is in turmoil but he does have an ally (an old friend) he meets again which is heartwarming. I’m hoping DI Little gets the flick with his constant itching and scratching (he makes my allergies flare up watching him) and DI Goodman comes back to sort the Saint Marie criminal population out because there are so many murderers on the loose on such a small island.

  5. I saw the video clip yesterday of this bit. It was lovely. From what I’ve seen of this show (bits and pieces online), it looks good. I hope it comes here soon.
