Friday Flashback: Ian Turpie: Smells Like Teen Spirit

In the late 1990s Ian Turpie featured on ABC variety series Club Buggery.

In the late 1990s Ian Turpie featured on ABC variety series Club Buggery hosted by Roy and HG (John Doyle and Greig Pickhaver).

It ran from 1995 – 1997 before being retitled as The Channel Nine Show for ten episodes in 1998.

Here he performs Smells Like Teen Spirit with the house band and vocalists the Nissan Cedrics (Dannielle Gaha and Louise Anton).

‘Turps’ performed as ‘Club President’ for all 4 years of the show, being referred to as The Giant of the G-Chord. He also starred in several comedy sketches, Turps about the House in which he played the flat-mate of the Nissan Cedrics, a police drama Sam Stain which also starred actor Harold Hopkins and Indira Naidoo and Star Trek spoof Captain Ajax which also featured Hopkins (whose character’s name was ‘Dogrooter’) and a sultry cameo from 10 newsreader Anne Fulwood.

My late mother always said the only person who could sing the Tennessee Waltz properly was Ian Turpin, he was the bee’s knees at the time according to her, we even had his version at her funeral, along with Elvis Return to Sender (yes that’s is what she wanted…why ? ) my late father would get me to watch him in Swift and Shift Couriers and Club Buggery. He was one versatile performer rest his soul.

  2. Loved the show and still listen to my Nissan Cedrics CD every now and again, but my Turps about the House plate was accidentally broken long ago. 🙁
