Airdate: Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle

1978's Jonestown massacre claimed the greatest single loss of American lives before 9 / 11.

Two part documentary Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle looks back on the Jonestown massacre that claimed the lives of more than 900 people – the greatest single loss of American lives before 9 / 11.

It  paints a picture of Jim Jones’s transformation from a charismatic preacher and champion of civil rights into an egomaniacal demagogue who led hundreds to take their own lives – both willingly and forcibly.

Based on the best-selling book by investigative journalist Jeff Guinn, The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple, and featuring archival footage – including unreleased recordings and photographs taken by Peoples Temple members and previously classified FBI documents – the two-night special event will explore the full story of what transpired in the remote South American jungle and answer the questions how? and why? The definitive account also includes new interviews with survivors and Jones’s family members.

8:30pm Sunday 14 May / 21 May on ABC TVPlus.

  1. I hope this comes with a warning….because I’ve seen a number of docos on Jonestown and Jim Joes, and it’s so unbelievable that this guy got a Martin Luthier Jr humanitarian award. Whenever I see or hear the word “Kool Aid “ (the saying “Drinking the Kool Aid” became popular after the event) it sends shivers down my spine. He wanted his assets to go to the communist party, even his own family died in the suicide…how appearances can be deceiving is an understatement. Terrible piece of work he turned out to be. Humanity should be thankful what’s left of him is a the bottom of the Atlantic.

    1. I was just hitting my stride then …what a terrible expression for suicide.. But I do believe there’s a theory it might have been a brand called “Flavour Aid”

        1. Thanks for the info. I watched Love and Death I taped last night a woman was making Kool Aid for some kids and I got shivers down my spine again.

          1. Have you been following the situation in Kenya recently where people were starving themselves to death for a false prophet? These things still continue…
