UK drama portrays a modern and avant-garde young queen through a twenty-first century lens.

2022 period drama Marie Antoinette premieres this week on BBC First and Binge.

Created and written by Deborah Davis (The Favourite), the 8 part series tells the story of a modern and avant-garde young queen, played by Emilia Schüle (Ku’damm 56/63). It also features Louis Cunningham & James Purefoy.

Through a twenty-first century lens, the series will explore the dark, manipulative and misogynistic world of Versailles.

Travelling deep inside Marie Antoinette’s head throughout the series, discovering who she is through her internal voice that often contrasts with the dramatic situations she finds herself in.

The season starts with Marie Antoinette’s journey into the heart of the French Court where her enemies are waiting to greet her – and it is destined to be a rollercoaster.

Fridays at 8.30pm from May 26 on BBC First / Binge.

  1. This has already been done-Kirsten Dunst in ‘Marie Antionette’ as directed by Sofia Coppola 2007-also looks like someone may have seen ‘The Great’ as well…
