Prime Video price hike

Amazon raises prices for its streaming site for the first time since its Australian launch.

Prime Video is raising its monthly subscription from $6.99 a month to $9.99 a month from May 24th for new members.

Annual fees will raise from $59 a year to $79 a year -the first increases since Amazon launched Prime Video in Australia in 2018.

Existing subscribers will see the updated pricing reflected on their bills from June 28th.

Amazon only has one subscription tier, which includes video streaming with three simultaneous feeds and 4K definition. The Prime membership also includes free delivery on selected products on the online retailer’s website and Amazon Music.

Marcos Regalo, Head of Prime, Amazon Australia said, “Prime members love the combination of shopping, savings and entertainment in one membership that Prime provides them, and we are committed to continue investing in and growing the value of Prime. Since launching in 2018, we’ve added more product selection available with fast, free, Prime delivery; launched Prime exclusive deals and discounts; and added more high-quality digital entertainment, including TV, movies, music, and books. With the continued expansion of Prime member benefits, and so we can continue growing the offering, we will change the price of Prime from $6.99 to $9.99/month, and the annual membership from $59 to $79.”

On a comparable plan in terms of simultaneous streams and picture quality, it still keeps Prime Video below Netflix’s basic plan at $16.99 a month, Stan $16 a month, Binge $16 a month and Disney+ at $13.99 a month.

Apple TV+ is $9.99 a month while Paramount+ is cheaper at $8.99 a month but $89.99 per year.

Prime Video is estimated to have around 4.2 million Australian subscribers.

  1. I’m on the annual plan and will stay on it even with the price rise it’s great value i only renewed the plan last month so the new price won’t be for almost a year i wish Netflix and stan had yearly plans so much more convenient paying yearly rather than monthly

  2. I love the fact there’s a discount for an annual fee like Disney – I wish others like Netflix had this option. I really enjoyed Carnival Row, Citadel, Dead Ringers, The Terminal List, and Reacher. Daisy Six and the Summer I Turned Pretty were okay. There’s also the Amazon delivery, a free new release Kindle book once a month and free music streaming so overall it’s great value even at the new higher price.

  3. when we got the email, we cancelled, really hard navigating to find the membership cancellation section, then they try and try to change your mind, 2 mins later, cancelled, they try to justify free delivery, but we hardly use Amazon, anyway Prime has “so so” shows so this price rise is a no brainer to cancel.

  4. I just see Prime as a bonus to my cheap Amazon delivery and discounts. If it wasn’t apart of the Amazon offering, I wouldn’t even look at Prime. So a $10 rise, is still a bargain for all the money I have save on shipping.

  5. I’m not a big fan of Prime Video but am subscribed to it due to their free Amazon delivery offer like many others, this price rise does make me smile though, obviously the silly media talk about this mega company being able to bankroll billion dollar unwatchable shows is not the case, and Prime Video are licking their economic wounds like a number of other US based streamers recently. Have any lessons been learnt by Amazon’s Prime Video?, probably not, they are one of the wealthiest companies in the world after all.

  6. It’s very easy to keep getting free trials for a month with prime video, just keep creating new email addresses and sign up as a new customer every month, amazon doesn’t realise it’s that easy , this price hike will mean more people will probably be having multiple accounts to get free trials all the time

  7. Still excellent value and I didn’t realise it hasn’t been increased since it’s inception in 2016… but that’s irrelevant to a lot people I reckon, because a $3 price hike if you pay monthly like myself is quite a jump.
