10 fires back over Seven insult

"Nothing more than a deflection," 10 says after James Warburton describes rival as a "falling by the wayside and getting weaker."

10 / Paramount has fired back at comments made by Seven CEO James Warburton this morning during an FY23 results presentation.

“I’ve said for a little while now that it’s a two player market, we’re seeing some of the worst shares we’ve seen on record for the third player,” Warburton told analysts.

“The third player is evaporating relatively quickly from a share perspective.”

He added, “We’re probably also taking a small bite out of Nine. Obviously the big two are going head to head and the third player is sort of falling by the wayside and getting weaker.”

His comments come a day after Seven and Nine were battling it out at 7:30pm while 10 gave up the fight due to a sporting competition.

But a Paramount ANZ spokesperson told TV Tonight, “The comments made by a competitor this morning are nothing more than a deflection and reflects a business strategy that fails to recognise how media companies are diversifying both domestically and globally. Paramount is a diversified global business with a strong domestic footprint and audience base across linear TV, multi-channels, broadcast video on demand and Paramount+ streaming.

“The imminent launch of Pluto TV this month will further strengthen our unique offering to the market with iconic global titles spanning all genres that will entertain every age group including new and nostalgic fans.

“We have also just won five TV Week Logies Awards, more than any other commercial broadcaster, validating the quality of our content and popularity of our shows.

“We understand our competitors would like to see otherwise but we are confident of our unique offering to the market and we will continue to entertain Australian audiences with fabulous locally produced content and through Paramount’s unrivalled global content pipeline.”

James Warburton was previously a CEO of 10 from January 2012 but was gone 14 months later. Although he’s had better success in reversing an ailing share price, Seven West Media has not paid shareholders a dividend since 2017.

  1. TEN was #4 when Warburton left. From televisionau.com, “Network Ten reports a full-year loss of $12.9 million following poor ratings performance for a string of new program titles”. (2013) “February: Network Ten CEO James Warburton is stood down after 14 months in the role, following a string of ratings flops”. And of course in Feb 2012 “Network Ten launches its new breakfast news program, Breakfast”.

    1. Loss of 12.9 million means they actually made good profit, think about all those artificial expenses they have paying for their parent company for content

  2. Channel 10 and Nine are definitely making more innovative TV that finds younger audiences and wins awards. I don’t think Seven’s older audience are looking for that.

  3. Network Ten has quite an enviable line-up in the genus of comedy and reality. Unfortunately, until they have a year round sporting code/s, they will continue to languish as that’s where the money and audience share is at. This is not possible until at least 2027. In any event, Network Ten has a place with the mighty viewer.

    1. Read between the lines – the remark was reference to the high levels of engagement those shows have with harder to reach demographics like 16-39 year olds who have abandoned linear television for streaming. People in those age brackets are more likely to be talking about and engaging with a lot of
Ten’s shows than they are with The Chase, Million Dollar Island, Australian Idol, The Rookie, Dr Harry or 911 etc!

  4. Sure 10 rates lower but at the same time their operating costs will be much lower. 7 has paid some big bucks for sporting rights, some successful whilst others not. Paramount+ will continue to grow and prosper so that will offset 10.

  5. This guy needs to pull his head in. Ch 7 are always so arrogant & full of themselves. There was a time when ch 10 was the no 1 station & had all the big hits. Ch 7 are on top now but things can change very quickly in TV land. Would love to see 7 taken down a peg or two.

    1. Did you feel the same way when Nine Network under Kerry Packer boasted about its ratings wrap sheet? I think James Warburton is more humble than his predecessors and if I were CEO, I would be making even bigger claims. Nothing beats a good soundbite.

    1. I’m sure Nine or Seven wouldn’t mind MasterChef, Cheap Seats, Have You Been Paying Attention, Gogglebox, Australian Survivor, I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, Thank God You’re Here, The Bachelor or The Masked Singer either.

    2. So ‘The Project’ is kinda struggling with ratings these days, ’cause folks with good taste ain’t really vibin’ with free-to-air (FTA) TV anymore. Back in the day, we used to kick back and catch ‘The Project’ on TV, but honestly, who even watches TV now? It’s all about shows like ‘HYBPA’ (you know, Have You Been Paying Attention?) or ‘Thank God’ on Channel 10 or ABC that make us actually bother with binge-watching stuff on BVOD platforms. Hoping Pluto jumps in on the action soon, maybe in a few weeks or so.
And seriously, I can’t wrap my head around how some peeps enjoy those morning shows on Channel 7 or the 6 pm news. Like, really? It’s just kinda sad, if you ask me.
