2.14m metro watch Matildas fighting spirit

Updated: 3.424m Total TV audience as Seven draws a huge share of 58.7% on Saturday.

An average metro audience of 2.14m viewers watched the FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off between Australia and Sweden.

Sweden dominated the match defeating the Matildas 2-0 and nabbing third place in the competition overall.

Seven drew a share of 58.7% including 16.9% on 7mate with the game on a multichannel in Melbourne and Adelaide, due to AFL commitments.

That prompted some social media outrage and press articles from those who did not understand Seven’s contractual obligations.

The biggest audience was again in Sydney at 785,000 viewers then Melbourne’s 555,000 and Brisbane’s 414,000.

Updated: Total TV audience, which includes Regional (889,000) and BVOD (401,000), was 3.424m.

Seven screens a presentation for the Matildas at 10:30am this morning from Brisbane and tonight screens the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final between England v Spain from 7pm AEST.

  1. As I mentioned in TV Tonight’s TV Lounge, which is a cool place to check out, it’s about perspective. Nowadays the multichannels are like individual channels, and not secondary or tertiary etc. channels.

I think the press might’ve known, but they like outrage as it gets clicks. I don’t like undue outrage, as it can affect health and happiness.

  2. To be fair, shouldn’t the numbers for the soccer for Melb and Adel be 0 as it wasn’t on the main channel? I think its a bit rich to claim them in both the main channel and multi channel numbers, but there they are…

  3. What a disgraceful coverage from Channel 7 last night. Pretty much as soon as the game was finish a quick announcement if you want to see the after game go to the website. Then bang the coverage was gone.

Shame on Channel 7. An absolute kick in the teeth to women’s sport in Australia.

0 out of 10 for your coverage.

    1. What website?

There was an announcement for Sydney, Brisbane & Perth viewers to switch to 7TWO for the post match coverage while the main channel went to the news.

Post match stayed on 7mate for Melbourne & Adelaide viewers.

It was also on 7+ for everyone too

  4. Whilst perhaps a poor decision in terms of raw numbers, it did create an Olympics/Ashes sized share for 7mate, which propelled that 50%+. Anyway, again, simply unbelievable. I’ve no doubt tonight’s final, even without Matildas, will go off, like a send off for non-die harda for a fab competition and memorable for Australia both team and hosting, watch out rival networks if it’s close or extra time/penalties and yet setting up Seven and disrupting FTA for another week.

  5. I was not one of the 2.4m who watched….gave it a miss again …but I did watch Insiders…..with Barney Joyce not getting a break…. mistakenly watching the wrong Matildas game….now he is the new coach for the Rockford Peaches ..from A League of Their Own….he’s gone and missed their game as well…😂 (its on YouTube)

  6. The outrage police in full force – somehow think that being on a channel other than the main be-littles the women.

Channel 9 had the Ashes in GEM and no-one cared… As long as it’s on and available in HD there is no issue.

  7. I also saw headlines bemoaning sevens “relegating” the soccer to 7 mate HD in some areas. Forgive my ignorance, but is the upset due to not all regions having access to 7mate hd. If not, I really don’t get the problem?
