Insight: Aug 8

This week a discussion around NIMBYs – those who say “not in my backyard” - as local communities fight against development.

This week on Insight, the fight between communites and local development.

NIMBYs – those who say “not in my backyard” – believe they’re protecting what they love most about their local communities by fighting against development. But are they holding back progress, and locking others out of their neighbourhoods?

As more and more Australians struggle with a lack of affordable housing, tensions are rising between those who want to keep their communities as they are, and others who welcome more high-density housing developments.

  1. I worked for HIA back in the 90s, it was a contentious issue back then, they predicted it was only going to get worse in years too come…I had 1/4 acre I was convinced to sell half because I had study and work commitments..a house was built on the other half and some distance existed between us, but the people next door had 1 acre and sold the lot. Developers moved in, built a “complex” left no trees or vegetation, the places were that close together you could ask your neighbour for a cup of sugar from your kitchen window while your neighbour just had to pass it to you from their kitchen window. Worse till some neighbours complained at hearing bodily functions coming from their neighbours bathroom…I did too if the “wind” was blowing in the right direction from the local bay where I live…there were regular arguments being in such close proximity of each other…I’m glad I had enough sense to downsize and get a 32 perch block closer to the bay…now housing is a even bigger problem today.
