Star Trek: Prodigy flies to new home at Netflix

Despite a cancellation by Paramount+, animated Star Trek series lives on.

Netflix has picked up Star Trek: Prodigy after its cancellation by Paramount+.

The deal spans the U.S. and most international territories, including Australia.

In June Paramount+ opted not to proceed with the previously commissioned second season of the show.

However Paramount+ continues with to go where no man has gone via franchise titles Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks and the upcoming Section 31 and Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Prodigy, aimed primarily at a younger audience, follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. The voice cast includes: Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Rylee Alazraqui, Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas, Dee Bradley Baker, John Noble and Jimmi Simpson. Also featured in the series are recurring voice cast members Daveed Diggs, Jameela Jamil, Jason Alexander, Robert Beltran and Billy Campbell.

“Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that’s always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together,” Kurtzman, Dan and Kevin Hageman said in a joint statement. “We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can’t wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world.”

Season 1 will be released on Netflix later in 2023. The second season, currently in production, will debut on in 2024.

  1. Good news, I’m also not in their target demographic by a long way but enjoyed this show, really want to see more of Captain Janeway from Star Trek Voyager and how that story plays out in this series.
