Planet America should be quite busy this year, and as someone who has been following Trump’s apparent political resurrection, especially as he attempts to sideline the court cases pending against him, I quite like Chas and John’s commentary.
My main channel of choice on fetch is MSNBC, it fills all my tick-boxes to wanting to know whats going on in the USA, I occasionally slip back to ABC24 or BBC, but the nightly crowd (Rachel Maddow, Alex Wagner, Lawrence O’Donnel and Stephanie Ruhle) are absolute to my coverage of any American political news
This is good to know. It’s good to see that they’ve thought about it and have a news team in Indonesia to bring this programming.
I think it could have a bit more exposure on the main channel, even if it’s early morning, given that Indonesia is going to have a major role in trade and diplomacy in the coming years with a lot more development.
I stated to watch this show many years ago as the means to better understand the American voting / governmental system and it has increased my knowledge exponentially and helped explain some of those things that from afar seem weird to this Australian.
I still find it interesting, even if it is to put more nuance and meaning to the candidates and “personalities” + help understand what is behind much of American politics. For example, their reporting on the “boarder crisis” is truly eye opening when you seen the numbers and implications and then put that into context of what we experienced at our peak – it really is a significant problem and it put it into context all the US political / media coverage it generates.
Finally I would like to commend John Barron. A highly under-valued journalist in his impartiality and thoroughness. Second only to Saint Geraldine Doogue.
+1.
Until this show came along, i didn’t understand the US Voting system that well. Then this came along, and with ease, understand it a lot better (not perfectly, but better). And get to know who’s in and who’s out in the race. A whole year of trying to get the best candidate for Election Day.
John Barron is so underrated as a journo. And Chaas Licciardo has gone from “class clown” from the Chaser days, to someone who is quite knowledgeable of US Politics.
Planet America: Fireside started a few Fridays ago. Normal Planet America is back next Wednesday and is more of a “generic” politics show.
Not that many American’s understand the U.S. voting system either.
Indonesia is one of Australia’s closest neighbours, and has a very large population like United States. Indonesia also has a general election this year. So where’s Planet Indonesia?
For better or worse, Indonesia doesn’t rate highly with Australians. Ask one hundred Aussies who the American president is, and I’ll guess 80%+ will answer with Biden. Ask the same of Indo, and I’ll be surprized if more than 20% answer Widodo.
This is why they should have a Planet Indonesia show. To create awareness. There is some priority and focus with the ABC Australia satellite channel in the Asia-Pacific region. It’s good for diplomatic ties and relations as well.
India Now did cover some other SEA nations, but obviously not as specific or comprehensive as PA. China Tonight a similar offering.
Actually I’ve been reminded Indonesia Decides is on iview 24, 31 Jan and Feb 7.
