  1. The perceived audience binge watch mentality or preference has much to do with programming decisions not only at 10. Trouble is this consumption type isn’t necessarily guaranteed success. Too many other factors in play at this time of year apart from the sports couch potatoes. Holidays and more socialising out of doors immediately reduces the audience potential for a committed three night fill of anything except something incredibly popular. The risk is too high for something not seen since the 90’s. 90 minutes is too long, but that’s the curse of commercial TV. Not all locally produced versions of shows popular overseas translate the same here. Many do, ‘The Chase’, ‘1% Club’ , ‘The Voice’ etc, but they benefit from strong local hosts/stars/cast and polished production. Some think the concept will sell it alone if it has succeeded elsewhere. Not so, the stars (in the sky) which need to align are far more complicated. 9 will be hoping the local ‘Tipping Point’ is lucky.

  2. This should’ve launched as originally planned, pitting anything against the Ozzie Open is doomed to fail, most recently infamously Seven’s previous My Kitchen Rules (which Colin Fassnidge soon after publicly criticised)…

  3. Is the 10 reboot of Gladiators connected to Gladiators which has just recommenced on BBC One? Because the BBC version, which has an actual live audience and popular hosts, is doing quite well so far. But 10 seems to be just low rent as ever, and, as you’d expect, they are already shoehorning in “encores” of Gladiators. Mustn’t call them repeats, you know.

Who is making programming decisions at 10? Who knows? And it seems, who cares? In 2024 there are hundreds of other options for TV alone, especially via streaming, so I can’t imagine why 10 thinks they can get viewers to invest in guff like their bargain basement version of Gladiators.

  4. I’ve just watched the first episode of Gladiators and am a bit surprised at how bad it is.
It’s very clearly been done on the cheap and completely lacks energy. Why would you make what people know as an arena show in a studio (I assume?) with no crowd? This was particularly noticeable on the eliminator where the only ones cheering the contenders were – weirdly – the Gladiators from the ‘locker room’, As well, I know it’s a campy format and as a gay man, I’m always ready for scantly clad muscled hunks, but Phoenix in the black hot pants and glittery top just looked ridiculous. The whole first episode also wasn’t helped by none of the contenders being particularly competitive against the Gladiators. Like half the first night audience – I won’t be back.

  5. Nine News is now 9News?! Gladiators what a disaster….as an emigrant don’t know the original format….but new episode almost every day 90s in is too much…. Who has time to watch this….

  6. It’s funny, last night’s gladiators was much better than the boring first nights episode, but I can’t help but think the damage was done with that first episode. The show is fine for what it is, but 10 scheduling has really doomed it. I would like to see another series but with some major tweaks, once a week and different games, but looking at the ratings, not sure that’s going to happen.

  7. Ten programmers maybe need to realise that resurrecting reality show formats from the 1990s won’t work in 2024.
The promos for Gladiators for the past few weeks have been relentless and annoying – maybe that turned off a lot of the potential audience even before episode one?
Even taking into account Ten having to compete with cricket and tennis on the other 2 main commercial channels, this result for Gladiators is really poor.
Speaking of irritating promos, how about Grant Denyer and his dancing being flogged every 5 minutes on Ten? I suspect Deal or No Deal in early February will be a gigantic ratings turkey.

  8. Ten and the other stations have to realise that some of the viewing audience is just not interested in shows that run over 3 nights at week with 90 min lengths. Once a week yes but not three.
Same problem with Survivor Australia – should be once or twice a week max and 60 mins max.
Take a hint from Survivor US or Amazing Race US once a week.
I know we let a lot of these shows go to the keeper, because we just cant be bothered three times a week.

  9. No one seems to have commented on how poorly 10’s showing of ‘Top Gun: Moronic’ did on Sunday night as well against wall to wall sport on the other commercials-difficult to see what their strategy is to counter this, but obviously it’s failing…

  10. I have a feeling that Gladiators will be shunted to a multichannel. 196k is a very unacceptable result. Are there any excuses? No. To have Gladiators up against AO is a disaster.

  11. I didn’t think anything could beat last years big brother but gladiators just might like others have commented it should have been a once a week Saturday night show not a 3 night almost 90 minute show ten may do a seven and bump it to a later time but i don’t think they will bump it to a multi

  12. I don’t like to celebrate failures but Gladiators was not and could never have been a success in the modern television landscape. As a concept it could only work as a once a week relaxed weekend style program. Trying to turn it into the latest stripped three nights a week show was destined for failure. Indeed it feels production wise a lot like Celebrity Splash, the notorious Seven shown whose audience dropped exponentially episode by episode (or to be even more cynical, Hole in the Wall.)

Ten deserve some credit for trying new concepts more regularly than their peers but so many of them just fail and fail – The Traitors is a good example. They do have the occasional positive outlier like Hunted but it is not enough to build a schedule upon.

Hopefully they will shunt this to a multichannel immediately and look in future years to securing some of the major sporting codes to support their Summer schedule.

  13. Strange here Gladiators is doing poorly but in the UK it’s going bangbusters, go figure. Maybe it’s a timing thing, here we are airing it summer n there it’s winter???

    1. In the UK, it’s only airing once a week and each episode runs for 60 mins. Compare to Australia where it’s been scheduled 3 times a week and each episode runs for 90 mins. There’s the difference!

  14. Well, that’s that. Gladiators 3.0 is sent out to pasture. Let’s see what else 10 can rehash from the past because why would they bother being innovative?
If us armchair critics could see it was going to fail, why couldn’t those whose jobs at the network to come up with ideas predict its failure? The mind truly boggles with 10

    1. It is a disaster for Ten. They should have just launched Survivor here now and used an established show to launch a new one if anything. Not convinced Gladiators was ripe for revival

      1. agree – perhaps Ten knew it might struggle so it burned it off 3 nights a week right from the launch and during the summer non-ratings so no one would notice. While the show’s offering is an alternative to tennis and cricket for audiences, viewers have catch up and the many paid streaming subscriptions to turn to instead.
