Airdate: This Is Going To Hurt

Free to Air premiere of comedy with Ben Whishaw as a fatigued gay obstetrician working in the public health system.

2022 UK comedy This Is Going To Hurt, featuring Ben Whishaw, has a Free to Air premiere next week on ABC.

This 7 part series screened on Subcription TV two years ago.

Whishaw is joined by newcomer Ambika Mod, Michele Austin (Meet the Richardsons), Alex Jennings (The Crown), Kadiff Kirwan (Chewing Gum), Ashley McGuire (This Country), Harriet Walter (Succession), Rory Fleck Byrne (Harlots) and Tom Durant-Pritchard (The Crown).

This Is Going To Hurt, based on Adam Kay’s award-winning bestselling memoir, follows Adam (Ben Whishaw), a doctor who we find wending his way through the ranks of hospital hierarchy – junior enough to suffer the crippling hours, but senior enough to face a constant barrage of terrifying responsibilities.

Adam is juggling his personal life with his hectic job on labour ward. He meets Shruti – the new SHO who is struggling to find her footing in Obs and Gynae. Adam is not the mentor she might have been hoping for, but she eventually gets a chance to deliver her first babies.

Adam treats a racist pregnant woman, but head midwife Tracy is unimpressed with how he handles it. In a chaotic clinic, Adam discharges Erika, an irritating frequent flyer.

He manages to get out of work on time to attend his best friend’s stag do, but is immediately called back to the hospital to cover a staff shortage, abandoning his boyfriend Harry at the party.

On arriving back at work, Adam discovers that discharging Erika was a terrible mistake – she is rushed back to hospital with severe pre-eclampsia, and he struggles to deliver her premature baby and save her life. His consultant – Mr Lockhart – is called in urgently.

When Adam finally makes it back to the stag do, he’s a changed man, having lived through his most traumatic day at work yet.
