Shōgun breaks Disney+ / Hulu records

Sweeping Japanese saga is Disney's No. 1 scripted General Entertainment series premiere globally.

10-episode limited series Shōgun has made a strong debut for Disney+ / Hulu (USA), as its No. 1 scripted General Entertainment series premiere globally, based on six days of streaming.

That puts it ahead of  The Kardashians Season 1.

Disney+ / Hulu report 9 million views -a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The first three episodes are now available, with new episodes every Tuesday until April 23.

Alongside Cosmo Jarvis who stars as John Blackthorne, the series features an acclaimed Japanese cast—unprecedented for a U.S. production—that includes producer Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji, Tokuma Nishioka as Toda Hiromatsu, Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro, Yuki Kura as Yoshii Nagakado, Yuka Kouri as Kiku, and Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba no Kata.

  1. Shōgun has been overdue for an update, most likely due to the budget needed, the last 1980 effort I saw starred Richard Chamberlain in the role of John Blackthorne, and this 2024 version is definitely worth a look, but I would suggest waiting for a few episodes as some will want to binge watch. Cosmo Jarvis as Blackmore is an interesting actor, almost shakespearean, with a boyish charm, the blue contact lenses he wears are distracting, I’m not sure why he needed them, but he matches up well with NZ born Japanese actress Anna Sawai ( who plays Toda Mariko) but she is perhaps a bit too modern looking for that era of Japanese history. Well known actor Hiroyuki Sanada has much experience with these Samurai sword play roles. Production standards are excellent, the studio built a full size hydraulic sailing ship, but there are some confronting scenes, which makes this show an interesting choice for Disney+.
