Warren Tredrea loses unfair dismissal case against Nine

Court finds former Nine Adelaide presenter was dismissed because of performance in the job when compared with his high salary.

Former Nine News sports presenter Warren Tredrea has lost an unfair dismissal complaint against hsi former employer, in which he was seeking over $5.7m in damages.

Tredrea took leave from the Adelaide station in December 2021 after Nine introduced a double-vaccination mandate for all employees. The Advertiser reported in January 2022 after he did not comply, he was fired.

Tredrea claimed he was unlawfully dismissed from his position and should be paid out the remaining $176,458 of his contract and up to 30 years of pay for the missed opportunity of employment.

But the Federal Court today accepted Nine’s counter-assertions that Tredrea was dismissed because of performance in the job when compared with his high salary.

It assessed his prospects of signing a new contract with Nine, following the network informing him of those concerns, at “30 per cent” – and ordered he pay all of his former employer’s court and legal costs.

In a press conference Tredrea said he was “obviously disappointed” by the court’s decision, and would consider filing an appeal.

“We are disappointed … this was a significant (financial) outlay to take it this far but we are very adamant in our belief that we’ve taken the right course,” he said.
