Insiders: April 28

Guest: Independent Member for Fowler, Dai Le.

Guest on Sunday’s Insiders is the Independent Member for Fowler, Dai Le.

David Speers is joined by Bridget Brennan, Shane Wright and Karen Middleton to discuss the week in politics including the eSafety Commissioner v Elon Musk over social media takedown policy after the billionaire owner of the social media platform X called-out Australia’s attempts to force the social media giant to remove videos globally which show the stabbing of Assyrian bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel in his western Sydney church.

The panel also discuss the crisis of male violence against women in this country as an average of one woman every four days is killed so far in 2024. The murder of NSW woman Molly Ticehurst allegedly at the hands of her former partner has sparked community outrage and calls for state governments and the Albanese government to act urgently to protect women against intimate partner violence. The numbers of dead women continue to be a national shame, so what can and should be done?

We’ll also analyse Wednesday’s inflation figures showing annual inflation continuing to trend down, but the March quarter number surprised on the upside and left many RBA watchers shifting their predictions for the first rate cut back to 2025. With less than a month to go until Jim Chalmers delivers his third budget the balance between satisfying voters’ call for more cost-of-living relief with economists warning against adding to inflation with new spending just became more complex.

Talking Pictures host Mike Bowers is joined by comedian, writer and presenter Lewis Hobba for a look at the week’s best cartoons.

9am Sunday on ABC.
