Screen Forever 2024: Are networks commissioning music documentaries?

Music docos can be highly competitive, say network execs, when chasing an artist with the soundtrack of a generation.

Tomorrow Seven screens Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story, following on from the runaway success of John Farnham: Finding The Voice last year.

Recently at the Screen Forever conference, TV networks were asked if they were interested in commissioning new music documentaries?

“Yes, we are interested in these,” said ABC Head of Unscripted Susie Jones.

“We’ve got one, I don’t know if it’s been announced, so I better not say what it is. But we’ve got what I hope is a pretty epic feature doc which has been in the works for a long time. We’d love more in that space. I think they can be can be highly competitive that space, having a name that everybody recognises and loves is going to be competitive. We’ve also got a series in the work that hasn’t been announced that is largely through culture and music. It’s about a social issue, but it’s music is the forum in which we explore it.”

Stan’s Head of Stan Originals Amanda Duthie added, “Love them. They always work more often than not. Yes it’s competitive, especially depending on the soundtrack of which generation you’re trying to get involved in.”
