Upfronts 2012: The CW

Youth-skewed US network The CW is adding five new drama series including a Beauty and the Beast update starring Australia's Jay Ryan.

Youth-skewed US network The CW is adding five new drama series for 50 extra original hours to its 2012-13 primetime schedule.

New offerings include a Beauty and the Beast update starring Australia’s Jay Ryan, a Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, Arrow with Stephen Amell and Cult starring Vampire Diaries‘ Matt Davis.

Three of its five new dramas – Arrow, Beauty And The Beast and Emily Owens, MD (formerly First Cut) — will premiere in the fall. The other two – Cult, which always was envisioned to have cable-type shorter seasons, and The Carrie Diaries — are joining in midseason.

Flagship drama The Vampire Diaries is being used as a launching pad for Beauty And the Beast, a reboot of the 1980s series.

  1. @ Casey

Thanks. What I don’t get is why not play the new shows on GO! first. Then onsell them to Foxtel so they could reply them. Although I do get they have a massive debt. Or the supposed owners do.

  2. Nine would have the rights to Cult, Carrie Diaries and Arrow, all of which would be a good fit for Go, if they don’t onsell them to Foxtel.

Ten would have Beauty and the Beast, which would for Eleven, but I don’t see the show lasting.

  3. “Australia’s Jay Ryan”…… yet another Kiwi we claim as our own. Wonder how his accent will go over in the states…. He can be a bit hard to understand even here.

  4. I’ll admit I like the sound of Arrow as well as Beauty and the Beast. Although the latter will probably be a paler version of the eighties show. I loved the original show as well as the actors. So I guess in theory I like the look of their Wednesdays and Thursdays including the other two shows. Does anyone know who has the rights to Arrow and Beauty and the Beast in Australia?

  5. I’m glad TVD, SPN, Nikita and GG were renewed for new seasons!

Didn’t care for The Secret Circle, the pilot was horrible. Ringer was a decent enough series but the writing was on the wall ratings-wise

Of the new pilots none of them really interest me, apart from Cult, and thats only for Alaric
