Multichannels give Nine the night

Ratings: Seven and Nine lock horns with primary channels, so the night is decided by multichannels.

Numbers were a bit unusual last night, possible affected by traditional Cup Eve events in Melbourne.

The X Factor topped Total People but Big Brother led the Demos as it ramps up to its finale. The end result was both Nine and Seven locked on a 20.9% share in primary channels. That saw Nine’s multichannels (including a rather good performance by Gem) push Nine over the line for the win.

Nine Network won with 30.1% then Seven 28.2%, ABC 19.7%, TEN 18.1% and SBS 3.9%.

Nine News (1.15m) led for Nine. Big Brother was 1.03m, ACA was 988,000, The Mentalist was 722,000, Hot Seat was 565,000 and Person of Interest was 484,000.

The X Factor was 1.3m for Seven then Seven News (1.2m), Today Tonight (1.06m), Home and Away (962,000), Castle (784,000), Deal or No Deal (494,000). Scandal was 312,000.

ABC News was 988,000 for ABC1 then Australian Story (921,000), 7:30 (839,000), Q & A (569,000), Media Watch (525,000) and Four Corners (515,000).

TEN News (677,000) was best for TEN. Modern Family was 668,000 / 642,000, Can of Worms was 650,000, The Project 6pm was 419,000, New Girl was 380,000, Hawaii Five-0 was 362,000.

Derren Brown: The System pulled 222,000 on SBS ONE then Mythbusters (178,000), World News Australia (150,000) and This is England ’86 (78,000).

GEM’s Embarrassing Bodies topped multichannels with 288,000.

  1. So glad Big Brother final episode is over. It’s the worst junk tv on channel 9. Now i can watch “big bang theory” from 7pm & descent tv viewing at 7:30pm

  2. Well frankly I couldn’t find anything of appeal on Tuesday night. If you’re not into rubbish like Big Brother, fed up with talent shows, silly American comedies and cop shows like The Mentalist, where the ever-grinning smug main character is sooooo superior in his every utterance (if you can understand him) as to be laughable .. there’s not a lot left.

I’m obviously getting old and cranky because so much on television is so fatuous and so geared to the very young, that I get ever more impatient with all of it.

Thank heavens for the ABC and SBS which mostly aim their output at a somewhat higher level than the crap dished out by the commercial networks, although I can look forward to The Good Wife tonight.

  3. Castle always did OK after Bones on Sunday. It was ratings just under 1m when it was on at 8:30pm Sunday earlier in the year. The repeats on Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30pm were also getting higher ratings than 784k. Drama ratings have been trending downwards.

The ratings for Hit & Miss v Embarrassing Bodies quite frankly embarrassing. Though I must confess I will be taping Hit & Miss on Friday because with all the staggered programming last night I couldn’t find a clear slot on a DVR for it.

  4. Wow Hawaii Five-0 beat Person of Interest! That’s great news for TEN, even though I love both shows. Good to see TEN is slowly getting closer to the other commercial networks. I think if TEN play the Summer right they could have their numbers back up for the start of the 2013 ratings season – but if they mistreat viewers by only showing repeat after repeat then their numbers will likely stay the same or decline.
