US news anchors resign Live on air

If your time is up, get in before the network management and announce your resignation Live on air.....

Here’s an idea if your time is up: Get in before the network management and announce your resignation Live on air.

That’s what two news anchors on WXII Bangor, Maine, did this week.

Apparently the surprise was the culmination of mounting tensions with management.

  1. Something similar happened in Perth back in the 90’s when channel 10 moved the weekend new bulletin from Perth to Sydney.

The news anchor at the time Geraldine Mellet (I think the spelling is right) thanked the weekend new team and then walked off set.

Would love if this footage could be found!

  2. I recall BBC Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis doing similar a few years back, when Radio 1 started a move to clear out their old presenters and replace them with new, younger presenters that would have more resonance with their listeners.
Radio 1’s hierarchy just shrugged their collective shoulders and admitted that they were getting rid of him anyway. They probably saved themselves having to pay out a fortune in severance pay too!

  3. If it was a mutual thing with the anchors and management you would think that a little highlights package would have been shown.

I would assume everyone (crew and producers) would have known this was going to happen and the producers would have ignored the calls from management to cut the show.

  4. I think I’m with @bradc. There is no audible response from the crew, so you imagine they were in on the decision and the announcement. And any ‘management’ person, who was sufficiently annoyed would have ordered the telecast cut.

  5. Is it just me or is there no realy indication that this was really an “on air” resignation? It just seems to be two people informing their viewers that they have resigned, for all we know management already had being informed. (although you do get the feeling it wasn’t on the best of terms)
