Who booked Ruslan Kogan? #qanda fail.

Internet entrepreneur Ruslan Kogan was out of his depth last night as a panelist on Q & A.

Photo1qaInternet entrepreneur Ruslan Kogan was out of his depth last night as a panelist on Q & A.

Kogan, who has built up an aggressive company selling big screen TVs online, was swimming for an answer whenever host Tony Jones threw to him for a question.

Despite claiming he wasn’t as “media trained” as the rest of the guests,  he should have been there to contribute some refreshing, uninhibited opinions.

He was unable to answer most of the questions put to him, even admitting to Jones he didn’t know enough about the carbon emissions scheme to contribute an opinion.

But he was happy to applaud the remarks of Julie Bishop.

It all made for a curious Q & A episode and the passionate ABC audience made their feelings known on Twitter:

– Is Kogan for real?! He doesn’t seem to know anything. Pony up, mate. It’s #qanda.

– Is anyone else sick of hearing about what Ruslan Kogan doesn’t know? You’re an Internet whizz just freakin google it!

– #qanda Russell Kogan’s intelligence is entirely artificial

– Kogan is more lost than that taxi driver who got pulled in to a bbc news interview by accident. #qanda

– I’m stunned by the limits Ruslan Kogan perceives for disabled employees – he’ll hire people if they can answer emails? Really? #QandA

– Ah, meritocracy, the panicked, drowning rat system. Could someone with media training explain why Kogan is on this panel?

– What does Russell Kogan actually do to the Internet?

– Get this Kogan off our screen! #patronising #qanda

– “russel kogan, what do you think?” “i think that, umm… julie. i think julie.”

– #qanda has some incredibly strong minded panelists tonight. Then there is Ruslan Kogan…

– Please #QandA don’t bring that Kogan guy back again. Enough already

– Just tried to scan Ruslan Kogan’s barcode and it offered me media training #qanda

– Horror #qanda panel : Ruslan Kogan, Kate Miller-Heidke, Bob Katter, Archbishop Pell and Christopher Pyne.

  1. Kogan was so embarrassing to watch. His lack of knowledge about anything topical is appalling.I never want to see him again…and his arch conservative views are circa 1950

  2. I tuned out this week knowing that Kogan was on. Last time I tuned in to a Kogan guest panelled Q&A, I was appalled by his attitude so much I immediately unsubscribed from his website’s newsletter and fan page. NicH: he is rather conservative, however nice people don’t get rich I suppose…

  3. I think the fact that he was exactly the same last time he was on QandA, only this time there were less plugs for his business, stands testament to and sadly indicates he is exactly like the growing number of similar selfish minded, whats in it for me voter.

He like so many others are so far out of touch with anything outside their own world it is becoming scary, and loved by the Abbott and Co style of platitudes without policies.

Abbott and Co. pander and target such selfish voters by telling them want they want to hear, simply because their votes neutralizes any thinking and Australian Caring voter that they can not fool, and again sadly it was out their on display between between Kogan and Julie on QandA last night, but thankfully it seems many others may think the same as me,( possibly scary as well??)

  4. Q&A seem to have a habbit of getting clueless people to sit in. I remember the very first episode was a disaster thanks to Julia Zemiro. As others have said, kudos to him for handing questions over, but I don’t have respect for anyone who shut themselves off from news & current affairs… Just remember; *He Votes!*

  5. Pertinax, Kogan already appeared on Q&A last year so whoever casts this show knew what they were getting. People probably thought “he was a poor guest, as others have been, and won’t be back” last time as well.

  6. I’ll give the guy credit for admitting that he didn’t know enough on topics to comment, rather than just try and fake an answer. But as a viewer, I found the whole thing to be rather difficult to watch and felt rather embarrassed for him. He was clearly out of his league. This seems to be a bit of an ongoing occurrence with Q&A, they seem to book a celebrity as a point of difference who ultimately doesn’t have a clue about politics. Perhaps they could send out some media packs or rundowns before the show so they can “study up” beforehand.

  7. The ABC rings around looking for interesting sounding people to be on the panel. Sometimes they are experts in a special topic, often they are just celebrities. They don’t test them before they go on air.

Kogan has clearly devoted all his efforts to his business and doesn’t follow politics at all. Most of the population doesn’t follow politics in any depth, that is why most political communication is soundbites, spin and out right lies.

The Q&A audience though does follow politics and wants to be entertained with opinion.

Kogan was at least honest about what he didn’t know, which is better than most talking heads. He was a poor guest, as others have been, and won’t be back.

  8. I like him. Instead of driveling on like most panelists when they are out of their depth he admitted that he didnt know enough about the subject (ETS). A refreshing change

  9. When Kogan was asked would he employ someone with a disability, I was (naively) hoping he would say “we already do”. But alas he went on with that patronising drivel about opening emails. It’s like he considers disabled people are only useful for the most simple tasks. blerrgghh!!

  10. Kogan was useless, but in my opinion Tim Ferguson wasn’t much better. Ferguson seriously suggested that all public transport should be free for everyone ! It would be good if it was, but the Federal and State Governments could never afford to offer free public transport.

  11. I have this on IQ waiting to be watched – should be fun, I actually thought Corinne Grant was way out of her depth when she was on a few weeks ago as well.

  12. there have been guests all the time that are the same. To do an entire story picking on one smells bad. I hope the next time they have someone similar they get the same shame treatment

  13. Kogan’s appearance was simply baffling. Josh Thomas had more important and compelling things to say, fer crying out loud!
However, what was really annoying was everyone on the panel talking about “giving the disableds a go” and the last one to speak was Ferguson, who was left with a little over a minute to have his say.
