Ryan Murphy: Glee to end next season

Update: Season 6 will be the last for Glee, says the creator. But the studio says it's not a done deal.

2013-10-18_0959Glee creator Ryan Murphy has now confirmed next season, Season 6, will be the final.

If you’ve lost count we’ve only just started Season 5.

I found it somewhat surprising the show was renewed for two seasons earlier this year, but it still generates plenty of revenue for FOX, including through its music sales.

That was before the death of Cory Monteith. Now Murphy confirms the passing has forced him to devise a completely different endgame.

“The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story,” he told US reporters. “I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was – he was in it. I knew what the last line was – she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.

“I have a good idea,” Murphy added. “I’m going to tell the studio and the network (in a week) how after Cory’s unfortunate passing we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honour, which I love.”

UPDATE: But wait. Multiple sources from the show, studio and network tell E! News that Glee’s end date has not been decided, and it’s possible the show could live on.

  1. Ten destroyed this once wonderful show. It’s still enjoyable but it has been hard to watch it with Ten changing it’s timeslot so many times.

Was a little disappointed with last week’s episode though. If it were true that Dianna Agron wasn’t invited to appear – then that’s just spiteful. I am sure Dianna would have been shocked over Cory’s death as well – and to read stories that Ryan Murphy and Lea Michelle didn’t want her back – must have been hard to take. Remember in the very first season, Cory’s first girlfriend was Dianna Agron – not Lea Michelle – and there was a pivotal storyline involving Cory, Dianna and Mark Salling (Puck).

Nevertheless, I’ll still watch it tonight – it’s a great way to end the working week – along with the delightful Miss Fisher!

Shame the rest of the week has such rubbish to watch… or not watch.

  2. J Bar – that’s often the thing with writing, though. You know how you want to start the story, and what you want to tell. More than anything though, often the clearest part is how you want the story to end, what happens and how it closes.

It’s just all the stuff in the middle that you muddle through to get to that part. 😉

  3. It was rating reasonably well with 16-49s, pairs well with The X Factor and gets plenty of attention in the press. And as you say they have music and live performance tie ins.

This year The X Factor is doing mediocre and the ratings for the second Beetles episode were poor. One season was enough for syndication and they may regret ordering the second season.

  4. Surprised to hear that he had planned an ending considering how badly planned the seasons have been. They ploughed through so many storylines and ideas in the first two seasons, which meant that the rest of the series has been a mess.
