Asian Cup 2015: guide

All the games of the Asian Cup on ABC TV -but the commentary is by FOX Sports.

2014-12-17_1718Billed as the biggest sporting event in Australia since the 2000 Olympics, the Asian Cup will screen on ABC from January 9th.

The top 16 teams in the Asian Football Confederation will compete in the event, with matches to be played in Sydney – Stadium Australia, Newcastle – Newcastle Stadium, Canberra – Canberra Stadium, Brisbane – Brisbane Stadium and Melbourne – Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Australia’s Socceroos were runners up in the last Cup.

Stephanie Brantz will provide a pre-show warm-up with guests but interestingly, the television commentary for the games will be provided by FOX Sports. Given the amount of money that has been spent to gain broadcast rights this is likely to raise some eyebrows.

· Every group round game featuring the Socceroos will be broadcast on ABC TV and simulcast on ABC iview, commercial free and in its entirety. All Socceroos finals matches will be broadcast live on ABC TV and ABC iview.

· Every other game night, ABC will screen a 30 minute highlight package bringing you expert analysis and the best of the day’s action across all four groups.

· Esteemed ABC sports broadcaster and AFC Asian Cup Ambassador, Stephanie Brantz will lead a team of national and international experts on ABC TV’s coverage.

  1. @Secret Squirrel I’m not sure Martin Tyler would be available either as he’s contracted to the EPL and Sky Sports. It’s a shame that Australia’s group games are shown on a couple hours delay. You’d want to hope they make the finals, but judging by their poor performances in recent times they may struggle to make the semis.

  2. Don’t understand why abc went to the effort of getting the rights if they plan to make no effort in broadcasting it. Its really just a simulcast.

Don’t want to keep repeating the same thing but as a viewer who would at times like to use your iview service during the Asian cup, but is prohibited as you refuse to provide an iview windows phone app.

  3. @Billy C – I suspect that the Foxtel commentators will have to abide by the Asian Football Confederation’s guidelines on this. The AFC (like FIFA and the other regional confederations) insist on no sponsors’ names for stadia during their tournaments as it upsets their own major sponsors.

  4. I have to admit to being a little disappointed with ABC’s schedule for this tournament.
When they announced that they were broadcasting this I assumed that they would be showing the entire event, and not just Australia’s games with highlights of all others matches.
I wonder if it would have been possible for them to have shared the tournament with SBS and allowed them to broadcast the other games.

  5. Yeah, agree with Pertinax, Foxtel has some decent commentators which the ABC has so far failed to demonstrate. Basheer and Foster are contracted to SBS so are prob not available to the ABC, even if they wanted them. Martin Tyler would’ve been a good choice but, again, might not have been available or perhaps the ABC couldn’t justify his asking price in the light of recent belt-tightening.

  6. Fox Sport has all the specialist callers in this country because they do the Socceroos friendlies and A League matches. It’s good that their experienced callers will doing the games.

The ABC doesn’t have any specialist soccer commentators and their W League calls are terrible.

While SBS has a lot of experience doing soccer they don’t have great callers either and often contract UK callers or take the generic English commentary on games. Bashier is really an anchor and Foster is an analyst and was terrible doing colour during the Socceroos World Cup opener.

The ABC poached the Asian Cup from SBS so that they can promote their 2015 line-up during it, like Nine does with Cricket, Ten does with the BBL and Seven does the most successfully with the Australian Open.
