2022 Winter Olympics: Opening Ceremony: gallery

Beijing turned on a spectacular Opening Ceremony in the Year of the Tiger.

Beijing turned on a spectacular Opening Ceremony at the Winter Olympics last night in a 2.5hr event.

Participants were masked throughout and spectators were sparsely seated around the “Bird’s Nest” arena.

Aerial skier Laura Peel and figure skater Brendan Kerry were flag bearers for the Australian team members in the Parade of Nations.

There were regular references to the Lunar New Year and Year of the Tiger, and the 2022 theme “Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together.” The Olympic torch was raised above the stadium in a giant snowflake bearing the names of the competing countries.

The Games continue on Seven until February 20.

  1. Went to watch the replay this morning on 7 just after 10am as we missed it last night. It was highly edited and missed 75% of the nations walking out onto the arena. So went to go to 7plus to watch it, but that only has a 24 minute version. Come on 7 what are you doing? My partner wanted to see the Filipinos walk out, but we were both disappointed. At least put an unedited, not cut down version on 7Plus.

    1. The Olympics are very funny/weird with their rights, prob not 7’s fault!

It was a great opening ceremony, but the randoms standing on the side jumping up and down while all the countries entered became annoying lol
