AFL Footy Show & Footy Classified host Garry Lyon is taking time out from media roles to address a mental health condition.

Nine’s statement is as follows:

Garry Lyon will stand down from his various media duties while he seeks treatment for an ongoing mental health condition.

For several months The Footy Show and Footy Classified co-host has been suffering from a serious mental health condition and he will take time out from all media roles to recover. There is no set timeframe as to when he will return to television.

“We are all supporting Garry and hope he will be back to good health very soon. Our priority is his wellbeing,” said Ian Paterson, Managing Director Nine Melbourne.

“Garry has our full support. From here on, it’s a private and personal matter and we ask that be respected.”

The Footy Show will return next month. James Brayshaw will host the show solo until Garry is fit to return.

Damian Barrett will fill in for Garry on Footy Classified during his absence.

  1. I get so frustrated with the idea that because someone is in the public eye they are therefore consenting to their private life to be scrutinised. If a person with a public profile wishes to disclose private matters that is up to them, if they have chosen not to discuss it publicly that should be respected, after all in this case (and most cases), if any of the gossip is true it only effects the people around them, it is not anybody else’s business. The public also seem to forget that prominent figures have people in their lives who are not in the spotlight who then have further stress placed on them on top of whatever crisis or problem has developed. I do think there are some exceptions, for instance criminal activity, but this situation is certainly not one of them.

  2. I really hope Garry gets better soon. I Like both Billy and Garry and wish them both well. Unfortunately when you choose to be in the public spotlight as a career your personal life unfortunately does not automatically become private when you want it to.
