Screenwriter Vicki Madden, whose award-winning Kettering Incident miniseries is coming to Foxtel’s Showcase channel soon, is tutoring an intensive writing course at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in July.

AFTRS Open is running short courses including writing, editing, documentary and presenting as part of their Winter Intensives program in Sydney.

All courses are taught by industry professionals.

Courses run from 5-days to 3-weeks and include: 5-day Writing for TV Intensive (18 – 22 July) with hugely experienced TV writer and showrunner Vicki Madden whose mystery drama series, The Kettering Incident soon to run on Foxtel, has taken out the Special Jury Prize at this year’s Festival Séries Mania in Paris, the Cannes of ‎TV festivals! Celebrating and showcasing the best in drama series from around the world, this year’s festival jury was overseen by David Chase, creator of the Sopranos and The Kettering Incident had stiff competition including Marin Scorsese’s Vinyl. So this intensive course is a chance to learn from one of the best in the business!

There’s also 5-day Feature Documentary Intensive (20 – 24 June) with AFI nominated producer Dylan Blowen (The Snowman, A Northern Town) which will help you get started the correct, industry standard way. Over five intensive days, you’ll be guided from concept to pitch, and take your 60+ minute feature doco idea to the cusp of pre-production.

If you’d rather be in front of the camera, or behind a mic, there’s TV & Radio Presenting Intensive (20 – 24 June) with Marie Patane, whose many credits include the Nine Network and the Today Show. Marie will give you practical tuition in on-camera presenting skills including writing your own scripts, conducting interviews on camera, voice over skills for TV and radio, announcing skills, working with autocue and developing your own unique presenting style.

Then in August there’s the 10-day TV Editing Intensive (8 – 19 August) highly experienced Online Editor and Colourist and an Avid Certified Instructor Rebecca Edwards. Delivered over two consecutive weeks, this course combines technical training in the use of Avid Media Composer, the non-linear film/video editing application used extensively in most movie and television productions, with an introduction to the creative art of editing for television and practical, hands-on exercises. Plus you’ll complete the official Avid-certified intensive course combining Editing Essentials (101) and Video Effects (110), which together will prepare you for Avid’s User Level certification.

Other Winter Intensives include Three Week Film School, Filmmaking Intensive, Short Film Screenwriting and Radio Intensive. For all courses visit the AFTRS Open website.
