Missing arm confounds Media Watch

A continuity bungle on Home and Away? Not exactly.

“Soapies are not normally on the Media Watch radar, but we couldn’t go past this continuity bungle on Home & Away last night,” Media Watch posted on their Facebook page.

The confusion emerged from Home and Away‘s Madeline ‘Maddy’ Osborne (Kassandra Clementi) ‘amputated arm’ seemingly switching from left to right.

Her character lost her arm last week after it was caught under a heavy load following a deadly explosion.

It turns out the confusing shot was used with a mirror.

“Mirror mirror on the wall…on reflection there was no bungle at all. Our soapie watch days are over already,” said Media Watch.

  1. I don’t get why this is even such a big issue? I watched the episode and, yeah, for a second I was a tad confused about her arm but then it didn’t take me long to realise that she was sitting in front of a mirror! I mean, her character even got up and walked in front of said mirror and you could see her and her reflection at the same time! Having said that, the director probably should’ve made that particular shot more obvious but come on, if the audience were watching the scene properly then this would be such a non-issue.

  2. I hope she stays, but I think she will written out within two weeks *rolleyes* Do we even have a regular disabled character in Australian TV shows?

      1. Even Arcade, in its marathon 6-week run, had a character in a wheelchair, played by Christine Harris.

But Number 96 had Arnold Feather lose a leg with actor Jeff Kevin having to walk with a heavy limp to emphasise Arnold’s wooden leg… but apparently after a while they just told him to quit the limp and go on as if nothing had ever happened!

    1. How about Alex (played by Kristian Schmidt) in Packed to the Rafters? Really well done, with his cerebral palsy being in the background in his story arc.

  3. “… lost her arm last week …”

Healed up quick. Yabbie Creek University Hospital must have some top-notch orthopedic & plastic surgeons. It’s probably a centre of excellence, what with all the explosions and shark attacks (not to mention the leukemia cluster that seems centred on Summer Bay…)

    1. If you were following the storyline, she discharged herself from the hospital, unknown to staff. The ensuing storyline is she needs ongoing treatment. Don’t remember the last “shark attack” in Summer Bay.

  4. Makes me think Miss Clementi’s character Maddy will be written out of Home & Away in due course.
Unless the writers have a strong storyline in mind to highlight a disability like this in a young person.
All kudos to the actress for carrying off her scenes with the obvious discomfort of having her left arm strapped up somewhere out of sight.

  5. I thought the exact same thing until I went back and watched it again and realized it was a shot of the mirror with her looking into it.
