Unimpressed viewers of the NRL Footy Show took to social media last night following a ‘joke’ by Beau Ryan that has been criticised as casual racism.
Filming in the suburb of Wentworthville for his “Beau Knows” segment, Ryan approached several locals.
One included a woman of Asian appearance who was taking a photo of small dogs with her iPad.
“Picking out which one for dinner?” Ryan asked.
Making unfortunate matters worse, the show’s official Twitter account then tweeted the gag before later deleting it.
I don't know why channel 9 would air that racist remark by beau Ryan, absolute disgrace and not even remotely funny!! #growup

#NRL Will Beau Ryan's ill advised racist joke be on the front page of the Daily Telegraph? Probably not

What's with Footy Show's and casual racism? Awful! https://t.co/bu2Xj3kNUD

How does that even go to air? Forget Beau Ryan, surely even one person in the process of that making it onto TV realised it's not okay.

Just remember. A person in 2016 edited and then approved that footage from the NRL Footy Show.

The question of inclusion by producers of the pre-recorded joke is more concerning than Ryan’s lack of taste. It was not a Live TV slip of the tongue but part of an edited segment.
However not everybody was as surprised by its inclusion.
I really don't think what Sam Thaiday and Beau Ryan said were worthy of the outrage. Unnecessary, but society these days has gone mad.

The worst thing about this @NRLFootyShow controversy is the amount of people who still waste their lives watching the footy show

UPDATE: “We apologise for any offence caused, the segment is a comedy one where we have fun with people, but not intentionally at their expense,” NRL Footy Show executive producer Glenn Pallister said in a statement.
“We clearly went too far on this occasion.”

I am Asian (half Singaporean) and find this offensive
How on earth, at some point between this being filmed and actually making it to air, did nobody put their hand up and question whether it was appropriate? Seriously pathetic.
I see Nine has now issued an apology. After all the recent apologies, I wonder if they’ve considered adding the word “Sorry” to their logo. It could save a lot of time.
yeah 9sorry lol
Wonder which producer will be hung for this . Of course the on air “talent” or The Head of Sports Teflon Tom won’t be .. Poor nine can’t take a trick .. what should be easy ratings win for week undermined by what you said could have been avoided by editing
It’s not casual racism. It’s overt racism. Vile and unfunny.
I think you are over reacting. His comment probably belongs in a different era when certain cuisines allegedly had dog on the menu. I have never seen dog on the menu anywhere and have eaten in many restaurents all over the world. So probably best not to get too carried away with a tiny comment on a show watched by only a few 1,000 out of a population of 20 odd million.
the guy is fool. i dont find him funny. he is the reason why i dont watch the nrl footy show anymore
Casual or causal?
As usual a minor, casual comment blown out of proportion. It would have been funny if she had replied….’No! I was choosing your dinner!’
Must have been the night for it, the AFL footy show had Sam Newman telling Rebecca Maddern to “get on her knees” for him.
Look forward to the on air apology from 60 Minutes over this.
Does that count as casual?
