Is David Dickinson the man who can do what Bert couldn’t – beat Andrew O’Keefe?

Dickinson hosted Bargain Hunt, a game-show where collectors run amok in car-boot sales.

The British show started in 2000 and Dickinson’s flamboyant hosting style saw him become a cult figure. A night-time version was launched afterwards but has since concluded.

Bargain Hunt will follow Antiques Roadshow at 5pm.

Wikipedia describes the format as: Two teams (the Reds and the Blues), both made up of two people, are given £300 (originally £200) each. With each accompanied by an antiques trade expert, the two teams each buy three lots of items from bric-a-brac sales and attempt to make their money back (or more) by auctioning them off. The participants keep any profit they make, and since 2004 “golden gavel” trophies are awarded to any team which makes a profit on all three of their items.

Dickinson’s fame came from presenting the game show Bargain Hunt on the BBC. The show had a cult following in the United Kingdom, largely among students and the unemployed, owing to its daytime slot. A weekly evening slot, added later, brought him to the attention of a wider public.

Dickinson was replaced by Tim Wonnacott from 2003.

There is the possibility that as a programming move it is a temporary one. There are rumours of Temptation moving to 5:30pm and even Eddie at 7pm is now a real possibility.

Nine needs Bargain Hunt to work and give its News a stronger lead-in.
