Daryl: Give Sonia the gig

Daryl Somers has denied media reports that suggest he quit Dancing with Stars over demands for more money. There were also claims he wanted his name attached to the title, and an elaborate Winnebago dressing room.

“None of that is true,” Somers told the Herald Sun.

“I really don’t want to give credence to it. It’s just rubbish,” he said.

“Leaving Seven is an amiable situation. (Seven Network CEO) David Leckie and I will have lunch in the new year and maybe there will be something down the track Somers Carroll can package with Seven.”

For now he wants to think about where to next, but he says he won’t be rushing into anything.

Somers also says he signed from season to season contracts to allow him a clean exit.

“I just feel instinct got me into it (DWTS) and a gut feeling got me out of it. I thought deeply about whether to do five, or six, then seven seasons. I didn’t want to stay and end up thinking, ‘gee, I wish I’d not stayed because there was a sense of the program fading’. I think after seven I’m going out on top. I do wish the guys well if they choose to continue. I think they should do another season and hit the refresh button.”

But he does admit to offering ideas to tweak the format, which were rejected by producers.

“I used to think it would be great if we could put the grand final of the show in a major venue and do a half-hour red-carpet thing before it. It’s a glamour show, variety and fun. Maybe they (Seven and the BBC) thought I was trying to take the format too far.”

Somers has again annointed Sonia Kruger as his natural successor.

“She could step up and do it,” he says. “She’s quite capable. Sonia’s been doing the show beautifully. She’s just terrific and I’ll miss that.”
