December 23: Festivus for the Restivus

“I find tinsel distracting,” said Frank Costanzo in Seinfeld.

And so Festivus was born, celebrated each year on December 23.

Frank Costanza: Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.
Cosmo Kramer: What happened to the doll?
Frank Costanza: It was destroyed. But out of that a new holiday was born: a Festivus for the rest of us!

As Wikipedia tells us “The holiday includes novel practices such as the “Airing of Grievances”, in which each person tells everyone else all the ways they have disappointed him/her over the past year. Also, after the Festivus meal, the “Feats of Strength” are performed, involving wrestling the head of the household to the floor, the holiday only ending if the head of the household is actually pinned.”

Cosmo Kramer: Is there a tree?
Frank Costanza: No, instead, there’s a pole. It requires no decoration.
Frank Costanza: It’s made from aluminum. Very high strength-to-weight ratio.
Mr. Kruger: I find your belief system fascinating.

Please feel free to leave a Festivus wish in the Comments section for all the readers of TV Tonight (late wishes welcome)!

  1. David, I was referring people wishing people a merry CHRISTMAS, not a merry festivus – which is a secular holiday.

    Don’t worry, it’s festivus for the rest-of-us. 😛

  2. lol – this is probably one of the best episodes of Seinfeld, the other being ‘Serenity Now’!!

Thanks for sharing this hilarious Festivus and I wish everyone a Happy Festivus – or even a Merry Christmas – have a good one!!!

  3. Stop? I’m sorry I thought I hosted this blog.

Festivus is a TV holiday for everyone thanks, and it was even declared by a Jewish comedian.

Also note this site has posted news on a number of religions (search the words Muslim, Jew and Buddhist).

For the record I have also highlighted a Compass special on Xmas Day that looks at 3 religions.

  4. I wish people would realise that not everyone celebrates “christmas.” So stop wishing people a religious holiday not all of us celebrate.

If anyone watched channel 7 news Melbourne, they actually said a Jewish woman got an “early christmas present.” I mean, come on!

  5. LOL the scripts can be the new bible.

Thanks for all your hard work David happy Festivus and Merry Christmas I look forward to reading your work for many years to come.

  6. What about Disappointivus for the Restivus – when you know by Dec 23 that despite the many many hints, such as circled items in catalogues and directing the children to said items in store for them to memorise and then finding your Christmas gift by accident you know that are not getting what you “subtly” asked for from your spouse. Great site David, look forward to next year. Have a good Christmas.
