Bye bye squiggle?

The latest word on the looming ABC (aka ABC1, ABC2 and will-it-even-eventuate ABC3) switch is that whilst the fond “squiggle” logo will remain for the ABC Corporation, it won’t be prominent on ABC TV anymore.

Instead, after four decades use, it is expected to be replaced by this simple ABC1 logo format, claims The Australian.

The change will take place on February 8.

UPDATED: Director of Television Kim Dalton expressed his frustration over The Australian story, which stated the worm was set to go, saying: “It’s wrong. I don’t know why [they] wrote that, it’s not true.”

“We’re announcing next week a new look for both ABC television and what’s at the present known as ABC2. That’s going to involve a new onscreen look. But the worm will absolutely retained as part of the branding for both of our channels.”

The ABC squiggle was instituted as the then Australian Broadcasting Commission’s corporate logo in 1965 after graphic designer Bill Kennard won a staff competition.

The rebranding of the network reflects that of the BBC: BBC1, BBC2, BBC3 and BBC4.

An unofficial ABC blog also speculates on some changes to the channel location, including the use of Channels 20, 21 and 22.

  1. Who worries about watermarks? How about people who want to watch the show without a big corporate stain all over it half way across the screen?

Seriously, I think this blog is being monitored by TV station lackeys and suck-ups.

  2. Nah they wont remember, who the hell wastes brain cells remembering/worrying about what logo a channel has?
As for watermarks, just dont watch the channel and download the show you wanna see 😉

  3. “The worm” – I bet you Nine are lining up their lawyers on that one.. Anyway, after pulling 60 minutes Election Debate feed because of the worm, I would have thought the ABC would have found another word to describe such an iconic image.

Im really surprised The Australian and ABC are at each other – NOT !!!!
Looks like the fight is going to continue into this year as well – can’t wait for Media Watch to retrun

  4. If they are going to move ABC2 to 22, I thought they would have moved ABC1 HD to 21. Then anyone with a HD STB would have:
    21 ABC1
    22 ABC2
    23 ABC3 (future?)

  5. Don’t do it !!!! Remember what happened at Nine when they dropped their logo !!! And now it is back. Save your money, actually save our money because you are a government owned entity!!!!

  6. Oh, they’ll remember – IF the rumours of large, solid, opaque, coloured watermarks in the 4:3 area are true.

The new logo, by the way, absolutely sucks. It has abut as much style as a Year 9 art project.
