Minister checks on SBS ads

The new Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, will order SBS will order to provide legal advice to support ad breaks within programs.

“I’ll be seeking advice from SBS, a report on the legal advice from SBS on this matter,” Senator Conroy told The Australian.

SBS modified its advertising placements from long breaks at the end of programmes to shorter breaks in between shows.

SBS managing director Shaun Brown justified the decision on revenue grounds.

Senator Conroy would not comment on whether SBS would be compensated from the public purse if its decision to use in-program advertising was overturned. “We’ll be having discussions with the ABC and the SBS over the course of the next six months (as part of the budgetary process),” he said.

The new Labor government is also understood to be scrapping Digital Australia, a body which will oversee the transition from analogue to digital television.

  1. Good. If they go back to adverts in between programming, I may go back to watching SBS. I haven’t watched Mythbusters or Top Gear since they changed it.
