So what’s ABC3 anyway?

Some viewers may have noticed ABC3 was added to their TVs yesterday.

The ABC has reset its digital channels as:

ABC1 is now 2 and 21.
ABC2 is now 22.
ABC3 is now 23.

ABC HD remains 20.

The network has added ABC3 to avoid a further reset later in the year.

However, the ABC is yet to hear if the new federal government will fund ABC3, which it plans to use for a kids’ channel. The Labor government has indicated it will not be announcing any decisions until the federal budget.

  1. I would love them to bring back and play all the really old Australian kid’s TV shows which were made by the ABC and for the ABC – but have not been seen in years! Here is a list of some of them. They are all really old Australian ABC shows (previously anyway).

    1) Swap Shop (George And Mimi)
    2) Mr Squiggle And Friends (especially the 80s version – with Roxanne!)
    3) The Ferals (not Feral TV)
    4) Minty
    5) The Genie From Down Under
    6) The New Adventures Of Blinky Bill (the live action puppet series – not the cartoon)

I would really like to show these to my younger cousins – let them see what I grew up with!

  2. totally agree about the Degrassi: The Next Generation episodes, i have been waiting for them to come on for a long time and as soon as i heard about ABC3 it was my first thought, i really hope they decide to get the rights to it and show them even if it is on a later timeslot.

  3. I hope that abc 3 has foxtel kids shows and kids movies on it. Like ed,ed,eddy & jimmy netron and journey to the center of the of the earth and more. That would be so cool then kids could whatch shows that arnt nomaly on tv. Please put foxtel kids shows and kids movies on abc 3 It would be so cool.

  4. ON the Digital Box at home I r-scand the settop box and got a new abc (Abc 3) but it is not yet operational it just plays normal televised abc for now.

  5. It would make sense to make ABC3 have a green background, like they currently do for ABC Kids.

As with the watermarks, I don’t understand why they didn’t have just a squiggle and, next to it, a 1 or 2 depending which of the ABC channels you’re watching, like they did with the old ABC2 logo.

  6. Watermarks will stay due to the copyright issues and piracy. The real purpose for watermark now is not to identify what channel you’re watching, but to make sure you can’t sell recorded programmes, especially TV series and movies. Of course that is now becoming less important because people can download them from the net anyway.

  7. Ooo nice. So many channels. 😀 Anything special about ABC3 at the moment, or are they just playing kid show repeats for the time being?

The new ABC logo is pretty stupid though. “ABC” in text is completely unnecessary. They should just stick with the squiggles. Or better yet, scrap the damn watermarks altogether. There are too few TV networks in this country that we’re gonna get confused between them. 😐
