Kath & Kim in 60 seconds

Molly Shannon has been doing the talk shows last week including appearances on The View and New York’s The CW11 Morning News.

There wasn’t anything new in what she had to say on the US version of Kath and Kim, but it’s interesting to hear how the show is being sold to the US market in a bite-size 60 seconds.

“For people that don’t know it’s a comedy show about a mother and daughter, and their struggle,” She said. “It was a big hit in Australia. It has a huge cult following, y’know.

“So basically like The Office and Ugly Betty that was big, y’know, The Office was huge in England. So they’re bringing these types of shows to America. So they’re hoping to adapt it in a similar kind of way to The Office.”

The interviewer asked Shannon about playing mother to Selma Blair, noting “I mean you’re pretty much the same age.”

“I know!” laughed Shannon.

“Strangely enough, people don’t know that the two women that play the mother and daughter in Australia are the same age. They were a comedy troupe, a lot of people don’t know that.

“But yeah, right that would mean I would have given birth to Selma Blair when I was eight years old!”

  1. Cultural Cringe is alive and well in Australia. Can’t people just say ‘good on them’ for selling a concept to America. If it becomes a hit over there, then good luck. If it doesn’t, then we can be proud of the contribution to pop culture in Australia that they have made.

  2. While I agree with Sillygostly on what he/she said about Ugly Betty and The Office, I’m pretty sure the WGA didn’t go on strike simply to make an American adaption of an Australian TV show on NBC. I could go on about the new media thing and the 4c to 8c in DVD sales, but I’m not going to bother. Anyway, I might check out the American version. I watched a couple of eps of the Australian version and didn’t really like it. The accents were a bit too much and everything was too over done for my liking.

  3. Agree with SG. I’m not really a fan of Kath & Kim but it does have a certain aussie charm that will be completely lost in the US version. Molly Shannon is a funny lady..anyone remember the strange woman from Seinfeld who didn’t swing her arms!..but even she won’t be able to save this from being the dud it looks like becoming.

  4. *vomit*

Ugly Betty is absolutely woeful (typical dumbed-down Americanized trash), and the US version of The Office, while entertaining, is just another American sitcom (completely missing the point that the original was a mockumentary).

While I don’t consider Kath & Kim to be a “gem” by any measure, it certainly has its charm; but without its Australian setting, Kath & Kim has pretty much *NOTHING* going for it.

You’re telling me that the WGA went on strike only to hack up this drivel? Please.
