Nine wins ten

It was the week Sam Newman revealed he had prostate cancer, Mark Holden was dropped (oops, left) Idol, Molly Meldrum and Jonathan Coleman were dropped from Sunrise, Nine denied paying a streaker, Underbelly accidentally screened to viewers in Geelong, STW9 and QTQ9 were both found breaching ACMA codes, community TV broadcasters formed an alliance, Seven announced a new football show and Foxtel’s call centre problems continued.

Nine won the week with 29.1% over Seven’s 27.3% and TEN’s 22.4%. The ABC had 16.0% and SBS 5.3%. Nine won every city except Perth, which fell to Seven. Nine also took Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Seven won Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Nine’s win makes the first four weeks of ratings and even split between the big two commercials. One “decider” week coming up before Easter non-ratings.

Top show for the week was One Day Cricket with 1.6m, the extra-long summer sport has certainly helped Nine start the year strong –but now it’s over. Also performing for Nine were its Sunday News, the final RPA, CSI, Underbelly, weeknight News, and CSI: NY. But a Burke’s Backyard special ranked a disappointing 779,000 viewers in Don Burke’s old Friday timeslot. Splitting different editions of Gordon Ramsay reality in different states denied it a single figure that reflects his new cult status.

Border Security returned to Seven’s status as its most popular show on 1.6m. Observational shows RSPCA Animal Rescue and The Force followed. Next were News, Desperate Housewives, Today Tonight, The Zoo, Better Homes and Gardens, Grey’s Anatomy, Home and Away and The Real Seachange. It Takes Two was hit hard by Nine’s cricket, at 1.1m. By comparison an old rerun of the Vicar of Dibley scored Seven 1m, at a smidgeon of the production cost. Out of the Question had its lowest figure of 756,000 (despite a Seven press release claiming it had 765,000). Expect a change to its Thursday line-up over Easter.

SYTYCDA retained a strong 1.5m viewers for TEN. Bondi Rescue boomed at 1.2m. Next were House, Law and Order: SVU, Biggest Loser, Good News Week and Women’s Murder Club. Neighbours barely averaged 700,000 for the week, while Supernatural is evaporating before our eyes. Despite its poor line up on Fridays and Saturdays, Tuesday was actually the network’s poorest night. It is giving Burn Notice a burn notice and pushing WMC back an hour for the return of NCIS.

Doc Martin was again strongest for the ABC followed by Saturday’s News, Dalziel and Pascoe, weeknight News, Spicks and Specks and Collectors (shorts). In the profile 9pm Wednesday slot, the cable acquisition Stupid Stupid Man failed to make the week’s top 100 shows.

Saturday and Monday were again SBS’ best.

  1. David Gyngell is the man?.. okay then, if you say so. Are you looking for a payrise or something? hahahaha there are better ways doing that. I look at the whole picture, and 9 has alot of work to do yet to get back to the number one position it held. However, comments like those will get you a payrise jeremy.

  2. Cragie, I assume your comments are for KnoxOverstreet and not myself!

Jeremy, its worth pointing out that almost all of Seven’s big shows are local content: Border, ITT, H+A, Force, Zoo, All Saints, Better H&G etc.

The days of Desperate Hwives and Lost dominating are well over.

  3. David Gyngell is the man, I love what he has done to bring back class and dignity towards the general public, and I for sure salute him for it. Nine has so much to offer and many more things to come.

I am sorry I offended you richotb but 7 relies on international shows to help them with ratings, having said that people realise that you can in fact download those shows shown on seven and watch it at their own time with no tv ads (although i don’t like downloading shows, just to get a head start) but as for Nine, they rely on locally produced drama’s which draw me in everytime and so I don’t need to download them illegally.

  4. yeah, Knox, I agree entirely, “the footy show”, “Monster House” and “Australia’s Funniest Home Video’s” they all just SCREAM class to me *rolls eyes*

  5. I agree with jeremy and keloggs87 channel 7 is awful, daggy and boring. Not to mention stale and old and has no enjoyable shows whatsoever! Unless your a pensioner:) 9 has all the cool classy shows and has the best drama!

  6. BTW, that second comment I posted was directed towards Jeremy. Daggy and boring are the two words I’d use to describe Nine. At least some of Seven’s shows are entertaining. Whenever Nine decide to start marketing their network to people under the age of 86 I’ll start giving them a chance. And how on earth could you describe McLeods Daughters and Underbelly as “classy”?

  7. Haha nice one. I guess I’m not all that into Ch.7 either but they do run some good shows…even if they are shafted to werewolf shifts e.g. Six Degrees, Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Boston Legal whereas Nine just pull good shows like Nip/Tuck and Moonlight off and never reschedule them again. Although, any shows I enjoy on 7 like HIMYM, Heroes, Prison Break and LOST I usually download anyway to save myself the trouble of watching blocks of ads every 10 minutes. I’ve really enjoyed Ten’s lineup this year though. I’ve made a point to watch SYTYCD and Back To You every time they’re on.

  8. Boo. I hope Ch. 9 comes out on top this year. Channel 7 is awful. No enjoyable shows whatsoever. Well I guess I am a biased channel 9 lover.

  9. Boo. I hope Ch.7 comes out on top again this year. Channel 9 is awful. No enjoyable shows whatsoever. Well, Chuck and Pushing Daisies are there, but they don’t count as they haven’t aired yet.
