Big Brother reveals grandma housemate

TEN has revealed what it claims is the first Big Brother housemate for 2008 during ads on air tonight: Terri, a 52yo* grandmother.

“I’m outspoken, opinionated and loud apparently.

“I admire Pauline Hanson very much. She does remind me a bit of myself. A lot of people that we’ve let come here have brought all their problems with them and now we’re paying the price.”

Looks like we’re finally copying the overseas models of shaking up the casting (thank god) as promised. But be careful what you wish for. Will Big Brother tear at our social conscience with redneck opinions? I do think so….

You can see Terri on the BB website along with the typo that says she’s either 53 or 52* years old.

  1. Gemma – do you even watch the news? How about the two most popular current affairs shows?

They all milk and sensationalise extreme opinions and millions tune in daily for their dose.

However it will be ineresting to see what they are really like day to day interacting with other people. Sometimes the image they like to project can quite esily fall down.

  2. I’m all for the controversy that reality tv brings. But doesn’t anyone think its a bit of a perhaps risky and offensive move by BB to be almost promoting this woman’s opinions? It isn’t her age that is a problem, more the fact she hints at being against immigrants and multiculturalism. Like David said, what is the cost of this entertainment?

  3. I think BB’s marketing team have done a fantastic job as this promo certainly created a buzz here at work which is very rare. Everyone had an opinion on her!

It looks like the new production team have been actually listening to their audiences. If there are more polarising and opinionated people going in I think it’s going to be a great year for BB.

  4. I think with the IPL criket on HD, there is little left for late night programing for BB content. They may repeat shows so people can catch up, but all reports are saying there is nothing else planned.

  5. Dead right David – Biggest Loser actually skewed younger in its audience. HD will have additional footage…most likely late night. Sometimes it’s not all about the ratings, but getting people to sample the HD channel. Interesting that despite half the comments here knocking the show, this article has created the greatest response on this blog for awhile.

  6. Since there are no Oztam ratings collected for HD channels yet, I doubt they would invest in additional programming.

We know what happened to The NightCap!

  7. Looking forward to this season as it does actually look like it may be a little different this time around.
I can’t stand Kyle, but I’m really hoping that he fires things up a bit.

It would be good if they could trow some extra footage on the HD channel too.

  8. No oldies aren’t kicked out first. But those that cause conflict tend to be evicted earlier. Perhaps the changes to the nomination system may help keep these types?

Howver it appears this year there won’t be any evictions till a month into the show.

  9. Great to see that BB is going to have at least 1 older housemate this year I love BB and watch every episode of every season since I got hooked on it in season 2 really looking forward to the new season it should be great because peter Abbott is back BB has missed you mate

  10. The “I Don’t think so” was in response to the question in the sentence.

It said something like…. retiring, opinionated, diplomatic?….. I don’t think so!

I think it was a great move to introduce someone unexpected as the first housemate. It really gives me hope that will be a great season.

  11. Adam I’ve certainly heard that theory that she could be a red herring.

Then again, TEN did promise we would see the first housemate revealed during SYTYCDA, so unless it was an audience member I didn’t see any other real housemates.

My feeling is TEN is keen to convince us that BB is completely different this year it is actually being up front so that we believe them and tune in. They will still keep plenty under wraps.

  12. Finally someone different as promised!

Looks like they’re revealing more housemates this week and I hope each one will be just as different. However I can’t imagine them completely abandoning their younger audience by not including some young “eye candy”.

So far they’re making all the right moves to mature and change people’s perceptions of the format. So far, so good!

  13. i think BB has left it too late to start bringing in a mix of housemates out of the usual Ten demographic. They should have done it last year or even earlier.
