Moment of cancellation

Nine’s local version of Moment of Truth is officially “on hold.”

This unsurprising news follows lacklustre ratings for the US series which airs tonight. Last week Nine screened the notorious ep in which a woman effectively detonated her marriage live on national TV. It gained a modest increase for Nine but without any significant ammo the show will be lucky to make it to next week.

Airing the US series was always a risky move for Nine. With the audience unimpressed by the show’s spiteful premise did they jeopardise the chances of a local version the minute they aired the US version? Probably.

On the other hand, they also saved themselves significant production expense by testing the water first.

And will Nine fare any better with Mark Burnett’s Amnesia? It has promised the game show for 2008 in which partners win money by answering questions about their own lives.

Production staff allocated to Moment of Truth are now likely to be moved across to a return for The Singing Bee.
