Seven finds family fare

In storytelling tone is everything. Hearing that Seven is developing a new observational documentary series called Find My Family, leaves me a tad concerned.

According to The Australian, the series aims to “reunite mothers with children they were forced to relinquish and men who haven’t seen their kids in decades, as well as brothers and sisters who’ve been kept apart.” Will it include any of the ‘Stolen Generation?’

Executive producer John Rudd (The Zoo) says the fragile and unpredictable nature of reuniting family members makes it a very moving series.

SBS has done well with the genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are? and ABC has screened Family Footsteps, in which Australians experience the live they might have lived, had their parents or grandparents not immigrated to Australia.

The newspaper also says Seven may be producing another series of Temptation Island. Or was that a taste of irony?

Press Release:
Channel Seven today announced production has started on its moving observational documentary series, Find My Family.

Reuniting long-lost loved ones after a lifetime of separation, Find My Family will be one of the most emotional series ever seen on Australian television.

The series brings together mothers with children they had to give up in tough times, fathers who haven’t seen their kids in decades and brothers and sisters who’ve been kept apart by the tyrannies of time and distance.

Channel Seven Executive Producer John Rudd says the fragile and unpredictable nature of reuniting family members is at the heart of the series.

“It’s gut-wrenching emotion. There’s immense highs and lows. It’s real human drama played out before your eyes. Pure heart-beats and tear-drops stuff,” says Rudd.

“It’s impossible to experience this kind of television and not be affected. It reaches right inside you and takes hold of your heart. You’ll need a box of tissues for every episode.”

Find My Family is produced by Quail Television for Channel Seven. Executive Producers are John Rudd (Channel Seven) and Greg Quail (Quail TV).

The series will premiere in 2008. Channel Seven is yet to announce the host of Find My Family.

  1. I don’t see whats so “concerning” about this show. If done right, it could probably be an inspirational and uplifting series, much more so than crap like My Kid’s A Star and Big Brother.

  2. The ABC has a great show called “Can we help?” which includes a similar reuniting family/friends segment. It’s done amazingly well without getting schmaltzy about it. However I can’t imagine a whole show dedicated to it, and knowing 7 they will have to sex it up!
