Nadine Garner: career policewoman

Nadine Garner, whose widely respected work in the industry includes Raw FM, Heroes Mountain, Secret Life of Us, Blue Water High and Henderson Kids, returns as Jennifer Mapplethorpe in City Homicide on Monday night.

She spoke to TV Tonight about the drama’s second series and hinted at what might be in store for her character.

“Writers being the generous souls that they are sit down with us and discuss story arcs, where to take the characters,” she said.

“The obvious thing to do is explore her age group, the fact that she’s single, doesn’t have a partner or a child. I really want to explore all those things very much. The modern woman’s dilemma. How do you find a partner when you’re married to your job? How do you find time to have a baby? When is it too late to do all that kind of stuff? How do you do it when you don’t have the support around you?

“I think they’re really interesting themes, very topical in this time of life. The society that we’re living in when it’s all to do with work and career.”

Garner said the while early scripts tiptoe around these issues early on she’s hoping the scripts to come take a bigger bite. But as a television stayer, she knows the writers have a balancing act to deal with.

“They very much have to stick to, as you know, the formula that is the homicide and there’s only so much character exploration they can do around that in the format.”

In the case of City Homicide, Garner feels the mix between procedural crime and personal stories is about 80 / 20%.

“Some episodes are more personalised than other ones. Sometimes the crime is so engrossing there’s very little room to go into the personal stuff. Other times personal stuff is pivotal. I actually like the balance, I understand the formula. I totally get what they have to achieve inside each hour.

“I’m kind happy with the way it’s going.”

City Homicide returns 8:30pm Monday on Seven.

  1. Leith, the final Secret Life episodes did indeed air eventually on Ten, something like a year after the few few season 4 episodes aired. They were completely unpromoted and most fans never even knew they were airing.

  2. She was in Secret Life Season 4 as a wheelchair bound ex-junkie who was getting home care visits from Stephen Curry’s character. At least, that’s what I remember! The episode probably never even aired, but as a die-hard fan I bought the box set. TV on DVD is my salvation!

I’m with Stevie G, I didn’t watch many episodes to begin with because I thought it would be the usual crap put out today, but it’s actually really well written and acted. Nadine Garner is truly one of the best parts of the show though, LOVE her character.

  3. I initially dismissed City Homocide as just another Cop show, but from the episodes I saw, it turned out to be really good and I was sorry I didn’t see all of them. So I’m looking forward to its return.

I have no memory of Nadine Garner ever being in Secret Life of Us, though.
