2.14m: Origin’s new record

The State of Origin decider last night toppled its own record, set only a few weeks ago, as the most watched Origin game in history. It scored a huge 2.14m viewers and delivered Nine a crushing 35% share. Seven had 24% and TEN was exactly half at just 17.5%.

It was the second biggest audience on television so far this year, only behind the Australian Open final at 2.35m.

In Sydney the game had 912,000 viewers and Brisbane 705,000. In Melbourne there was 332,000, Perth 107,000 and Adelaide 89,000.

The big NRL audience followed a strong AFL audience for Nine on Tuesday when its EJ Whitten fundraiser match kicked 795,000 -675,000 of whom were in Melbourne.

It was the third most watched match in Melbourne in 2008.

The sporting wins give Nine a 30.8% share for the week so far, ahead of Seven’s 27.6%. If it wins the week, Nine will tie with Seven for weekly wins this year.

  1. I heard from a source at Nine that due to the huge ratings for the EJ Whitten tribute match, they will now be playing it 3 times a week.
