Bindi Inc about to turn 10

A day after Bert Newton turns 70, Bindi Irwin turns ten -a milestone in any kid’s life. Of course it probably pales alongside winning an Emmy or strolling the Logies red carpet, but it will be cause for celebration nonetheless.

At her tender age Bindi has many detractors, which is probably pretty unfair given she would arguably know no other life than one in the spotlight. It’s just so damned hard not to be cynical when she’s as LOUD as her dad was, right?

But she’s also enormously popular, and like her father, will doubtless find greater fame in the US than in her home country. Industry insiders say that with all the merchandising of ‘Bindi Inc’ she could have $50m by the time she’s 30.

Harry M. Miller estimate she has probably already raked in $500,000 from herclothing lines, television shows, DVD deals and dolls. Max Markson reckons her star-power could peak with movie deals and customised brands in her late teens.

Manager John Stainton, assured news.com.au that “She loves what she does, and I think the big thing that’s wrong with a lot of kids today is that they don’t have direction.”

Markson said there’s little doubt Bindi will become even more marketable when she hits 16. That’s when her celebrity could explode through film deals and similar branding used by US marketing duo the Olsen twins when they were teens.

John Stainton said Bindi has fun doing whatever she’s involved in and she never does things she doesn’t want to.

  1. No, lancer1993 I’m sure there are many others like you and to a degree I can understand why. However, it’s quite easy not to watch something or somebody that you don’t like. At the end of the day she is a child – I think that makes a world of difference. Words like precocious, brat, wannabe, upstart, barbie doll in khaki, puppet of her parents, untalented and probably many more I have forgotten should not be directed so visciously at a child. I think common decency is a value that should be practiced, particularly when it is a child we are talking about.

You don’t have to watch her shows, buy her dvd’s, dolls, clothes etc. If she is successful it will be because there is a market for what she offers.

By the way, we have one Croc Hunter DVD in this house – bought well before Steve died, so I am not coming from an obsessed fan point of view. I was however surprised at how upset I was when he passed away. I also know that it is tough losing a parent at a young age, so perhaps I am more sensitive than some. Anyway, interesting discussion.

  2. Actually gold coast guy, pictures of Steve as a young boy do show a resemblance. I was amazed.

Anyway, the sport of “Bindi Bashing” is one of my pet hates in this country. Not only did the poor girl have to cope with the loss of her father in such a public manner but then after “we” outpour such heartfelt grief for her and our loss, “we” go on the attack of his much loved 8yo daughter. It makes me feel ashamed of many in this country – if you’re not a fan then fine, but the names this girl has been called in public forums (talkback radio, letters to newspapers, entertainment websites) are disgraceful.

I had this discussion with some people at my child’s primary school this morning. The conversation started when someone said (after rolling eyes and a large sigh) “Bindi is about to turn 10”, then the next person said “and ….who cares?”. I saw red, let fly with comments about ‘I wonder if Bindi Bashing is included in the Olympics this year” etc etc.

Bindi appears to be a lovely (yes loud at times – like most kids) young lady who has been born into a family of passionate conservationalists. Her road was mapped out before she was born. For goodness sake after everything she has been through can’t we just let her enjoy her life without bagging her out any chance we get?

When adults bully children so publically it does nothing to make me a proud Australian. If any of our children were discussed in this manner we would be hurt, angry etc. I’m sure.

By the way David, I am not criticisng this particular article at all. I just feel for this child so much (as I would any child who has lost a parent so tragically)and hate the fact that people are out to knock her, any chance they get. One particular Entertainment commentator on Melbourne radio really gets under my skin on this one.

  3. Is it just me or does she really look nothing like her father??

She even doesn’t look that much like her brother (who does have a resemblance to Steve).

Where’s a DNA Kit when you need one?

    Evan :p
