Gyngell: Nine "interested" in BB

Nine boss David Gyngell has spoken publicly about exploring Big Brother for the Nine Network.

“It’s run its race in its present form,” Nine chief executive David Gyngell told The Australian. “I still think it has some life in it in another form. Channel Nine will be looking at it.”

Mr Gyngell said he is a fan of the reality format and is aware of the revenue it can bring to a network across all its platforms. Nine will hold talks with owners Endemol Southern Star about overhauling the formula.

Big Brother was a very good show at its height and it is useful for the economic benefit it brings,” Mr Gyngell said.

“TEN paid a lot of money for it and they needed to get as much value as they possibly could so they ran a lot of hours,” he said.

“But running so many hours puts a big strain on a show. In its present form it’s not sustainable but it delivers good numbers among the 16 to 24 year olds which is good for any network.”

Nine may well be exploring the show for its multi-channelling options in 2009.

  1. I tend to agree with you rubii – as much as I would lve BB to bouce back.

Maybe a couple of years’ rest – as they say absence makes the heart grow fonder. Fingers crossed.

I too have no confidence in 9. They really don’t appear to have much of an idea of who their viewers are or what they want. A scaled down BB would not be BB and it’s loyal fans won’t stick around for a cheap imitation. This year’s cost cutting was obvious enough.

  2. NO!!! Bigbrother is too cool for nine!

Without heaps of hours the show wont need as much interference eg. task’s dairy room calls granades. wich will affect the show deeply channel nine is too cheap too pay for…
    1. Fnl
    2. GOOD hosts
    3. Tasks
    4. prizes
    5. Twists
    6. a nice looking house.

IT’S PEOPLES LIVES CHANNEL NINE CAN’T JUST SAY HALF WAY THROUGH NO SORRY HOUSE MATES BYE!!!

If channel nine gets BB it will kill the show and NO one will want to sign up!

  3. What they could have done and what they should have done – two very interesting questions.

I have never been a fan who has been hell bent on knocking the show. There are many people who enjoy it for what it is despite those who try to put you down for watching it or criticise the show because they can. People who have watched the show for a number of years and have seen it evolve are probably well equipped to offer an opinion on what they liked and disliked about it.

I don’t think channel 9 will have the ability to save the show – maybe it isn’t salvageable – because the network and advertisers will not be satisfied with current ratings etc. They will not be able to plough enough money into it and get a return on their dollar. It all comes down to economics in the end.

It does disappoint me that other countries (the UK for example) have been able to maintain a sucessful show. Are the ratings expectations higher in Australia? I don’t know.

  4. 120 hours of TV in three months and still the fans aren’t happy?? What is it with BB fans sheesh!!
You fans complain you want it changed and when its changed you guys say its changed too much, if it stays the same then they groan about how its always the same.
8 years come on! Even the Beatles knew when to call it a day!
As far as all the Jobs lost etc, they were working on a TV show, did they really think they’d be working right through to retirement on this show?
What ever incarnation it may return as, I know it wont be good enough for the “fans” and they will again be complaining how its not like the old days.

I think Abbott said it will and in a cryptic vein:
“All those who sit back in the sidelines and say ‘that doesn’t work,’ I think it’s fair to say ‘well what would you do?’ And then the decision becomes much more complicated,”
All these nay-sayers and no new ideas.

  5. Yes, Benno. If you are a fan it wasn’t enough this year – and what was on was often 24 – 48 hours old. If you check the website and livestreaming from the house regularly. it made the daily show old news – very edited (which it obviously has to be). This takes away from any suspense from a tv viewing point of view.

The Uplate show (despite all the lame money spinning phone-in games) was at least live from the house. Evicted housemates came on to chat, past housemates etc.

I get that it must seem that it is on a lot – especially if you aren’t into the show. But really to get into the concept of what happens to people when they are locked in the BB house, 20 mins per day just doesn’t cut it. You need to get to like, love or loathe the HM’s. I always enjoy the latter part of the series when I feel I can actually have an opinion based on what I have seen.

Anyway, that’s my take on it. When people can watch repeats over and over again of so many other shows, I like the fact that every season is NEW. This goes for Survivor, Amazing Race etc. Yes the condcept is the same but the people always make it different.

As you can tell, I am going to miss the show.

  6. Yep I agree ka-ching you are right on all points lets hope if 9 do pick it up lets hope they have some commitment to it

I also agree on the minimizing it this year probably would have had an effect on the ratings especially the way that there was no uplate and no live nominations

I would love to see Gretel bought back along with mike Goldman they are BB

  7. I’m with you Dan. I would love to see life breathed back into BB. A couple of points though:

Ch 9 is not reknowned for long term commitment to anything which isn’t delivering BIG ratings. They chop and change programming dates/times more often than they would change their underwear at times.

I would hate for them to take it on without some real commitment to the show and what it means to many loyal fans – and yes while the ratings have dropped there are still many lovers of BB.

I think minimising the hours that the show is tlelvised has had a major detrimental impact on viewer’s reaction to this year’s series. Without the nightly uplate show to give live crosses to the house it became all about the daily show – the daily show covers things that happened the previous day, in a very edited format. The spontaniety of the live eviction show (where you had to wait for them to be transported from the house – this year it’s like it’s out one door and through the next), the live nominations and not “those we prepared earlier”,the analytical mind of Gretel, the emotion of the family reunions (minimal this year), the tasks that go through the night (which fed the Uplate show) it has been a very lacklustre year. You don’t feel that you have missed as much if you miss a show. The idea of having people in a house 24/7 for 12weeks but cutting back on the hours the show is screened per week is ludicrous. It may as well not be on.

I don’t have all the answers but I would like to see a bit more substance from the show. Some discussions about HM behaviours that occurred on Big Mouth this year were actually interesting as was some of the comic relief – however it was too driven by the comperes who often shut down discussion just when it was getting good. As the original Exec Director said “the social experiment” has been lost. That is the real shame.

I just don’t have the confidence that Ch 9 would do the show justice.

  8. lol i can just see nines older viewers loving this news!! theyre are probably thinking ohh god no! all the talk about changing the show, how much can you change and still keep it bb?? they might aswell just bring out a new reality!! whatever they do it will fail! its overrun its time! but then again i would love 9 to have it cause i love network ten and i could see nine losing its top spot if they take on the show lol
