Pope hits out at television standards

Sounds like Aussie Catholics forgot to tell the Pope that Big Brother has got the chop. Today in Sydney he lamented ‘violence and sexual exploitation’ on television and the internet passing as entertainment.

The Pope said alcohol and drug abuse were prevalent problems but warned about the “exaltation of violence and sexual degradation, often presented through television and the internet as entertainment”.

Not sure why he left out movies and other forms of media, which have been in the same league for years. Cardinals as far back as 1929 were instrumental in developing Hollywood’s “Production Code” for moral decency which was administered by Will Hays, President of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA).

Of course there are others “guilty” of such transgressions besides one reality series, but TV and internet are not alone in this arena, just more profile, and probably more accessible to the youth who are attending World Youth Day.

“I ask myself, could anyone standing face to face with people who actually do suffer violence and sexual exploitation ‘explain’ that these tragedies, portrayed in virtual form, are considered merely “entertainment?” he said.

“There is also something sinister which stems from the fact that freedom and tolerance are so often separated from truth. This is fuelled by the notion, widely held today, that there are no absolute truths to guide our lives.”

  1. I’m so bored of these tired comments by dry old people with no connection to the real world.

How about addressing the rampant sexual abuse history of the Catholic Church, eh?

  2. Oh, the evils of television! I honestly don’t know how anyone makes it past infancy, what with everyone being a dupe to fast food commercials, and all those awful representations of sex and violence that serve no purpose but to titillate and entertain–nothing to do with telling ourselves stories about the cultures we inhabit, no siree!

It seems the only absolute truth guiding discussions about television by people who don’t watch it is that anyone who watches it is a moron incapable of any kind of discernment or critical thought.

  3. god why do we have to have this old bag in the country?? he wouldnt have a clue what fun was!! i mean look at what the hell he wears!! his life must be so god dam boring. he is just jealous that he has to stick that way
