Armytage for TT gig?

A curious item in today’s Daily Telegraph suggests Samantha Armytage is poised to take over the hosting job of Today Tonight from Anna Coren.

“Armytage has been a seamless fill-in and is regarded inside Seven as a good reporter and a warm, natural television host – unlike the cooler Coren,” it notes.

“…it is understood the news heavyweight has been influenced by the show’s executive producer Craig McPherson, who has gradually fallen out of love with Coren..”

But the closing line raises more questions than it answers.

“Although Coren hasn’t left, and no one has spoken to Armytage specifically about the slot, there are few other names being seriously discussed as potential replacements.”

I reckon people have spoken to her about it if newspapers are bandying her name about with the show. It just doesn’t make sense otherwise.

And while we’re on the subject why DOESN’T Seven have more contenders in its News and Current Affairs department to be putting on a shortlist? Especially for a network that keeps putting out a spin that it is #1 in this arena? Surely there are others who are gasping to be heard, or do we assume nobody wants to be tainted by the gig? After all, it’s a role that comes with a lot of infamy.

If Coren is leaving, and this seems likely, wouldn’t it be a good time for Seven to reinvent the show? But then again, why would they? It’s mix of consumer stories and sensationalism is netting it 1.3m viewers a night.

If that’s the case, just bring back Naomi.
